New to the state, looking for advice

I had good luck getting permission in Pullman. By the time I graduated I had thousands of acres of permission to hunt. There’s also lots of coyotes in the breaks.

I don't think much has changed in the past few years but just a word of caution.
 If the land is posted with "HUNT BY RESERVATION ONLY" you really want to pay special attention to those, it's a mandatory citation for criminal trespass.
