MT wolf
« on: January 19, 2020, 06:56:49 AM »
My uncle had 2 wolves come right into his call at 30 yds but left as quick as they came. He started the set with deer in distress. Changed the call to lone wolf howl and this female showed up about 5 mins after the other 2 left. This was the day I headed over for a week of lion and wolf hunting. Should have left a day sooner! I ended up seeing 4 wolves the next day. Not enough daylight and they were on the wrong side of a river I wasn't crossing in near zero temperatures! 3 grays and a black. They came out of the timber and bedded on a ridge top.

Very nice.  Wish I was younger, I'd be over there, this is breeding season so the wolves are moving around.  Looks like the snow is not to deep to get around in good.

Picture is a little deceiving as far as snow depth. Under the trees in spots it's minimal but other areas it's deep! Then you go out on the front and there's nothing. Uncle located a large pack yesterday but was too busy treeing lions to hunt them. He's up there again today hopefully getting into the wolves and a break from the lions. He's an animal 55 and still going strong!

Friend that lives in the mountains up there has the wolves right down by his house this time every year. They are definitely more aggressive and territorial once mating season starts. The wolf I shot was only 600 yds from his house. He has lots of yard dogs and a kennel full of hounds. Quite a few packs in this area with lots of singles and doubles covering country. Just like Idaho this area sees heavy trapping and hunting but the populations don't seem to trend downward.

Atleast you don't have them lying down in your headlights 60 yds at 3 am anymore! Little fear in most of them now!
