Chris,  here is my two cents worth.  Great plan and roll out of your safety concerns, but your safety also very important, this is what you do.  OK, now what?  I would caution everyone that we might very well be in for some rough sledding soon.  That said, I wouldn't be banking on this delivery as a done deal as many moving parts are taking place all around us.  I don't know what is involved with getting the product here to Washington, but I would be very concerned with such a large delivery and what could go wrong.  I hear there are about to be more drastic measures announced that will make what has already been done look like child's play.  I don't know exactly what that entails yet, but I wouldn't be gambling with $25K worth of product if there were a chance for it to go bad or spoil.  We've never seen the magnitude of events being cancelled, schools being closed, (NCAA, NBA. MLB, NHL, Major League Soccer, Auto Racing series, etc, etc, etc....  These are events that generate millions and billions of revenue and bam, just like that SHUT DOWN!!

I know some of you are in more remote places, but it is starting to get quite real around populated areas.  As much as we all Love your Fish Chris, you can't hazard yourself or your livelihood.  This is great because you and us put the time into planning this buy, delivery and awesome exchange of money, fish and story's.

So to end my "word of caution" keep up the planning, just now make sure your plan includes how you would shut this one down if you need to or were forced to.  In the end we will understand, and we will still all be your buddy and dream about the next opportunity to get our hands on your great product.  Stay safe buddy and keep an eye on the news, as I said, there is more to come on this issue.

Just read the rest of the thread regarding virus.

I'm looking forward to this but willing to do what it takes to support you Chris and everyone else. Whatever you decide, I don't see my order changing barring some significant financial hardship. I think everyone is aware of the challenges.

Electronic payments are good for me. Gloves are a great idea, I'll have my own.

Thank you,

Al

Chris, since you're to one incurring the most risk with this, I assume that everyone will respect your decision.  And because this is a rapidly changing situation, I also assume that everyone will respect any changes you make to your decision as new info becomes available.

All reasonable concerns regarding coronavirus.  Electronic payment and no handshakes seem like a good solution based on what we currently know.  Voluntarily backing out if you're a buyer with symptoms also seems like a no brainier.  If buyers find themselves sick at the last minute, then perhaps somebody else in the neighborhood can pick up for them and either drop it on their doorstep or hold it until they're healthy.

Also, I am very sympathetic to the fact that a lot of small businesses are going to be is rough shape this year, and I think the socially responsible and patriotic thing to do is continue patronizing those businesses (including yours) where it is possible to do so without incurring an unacceptable risk.

I don't know what your responsibilities are to front the money for the fish you're distributing, but if that's part of the gig then I'll make a recommendation.  If you have to cancel at the last minute and are stuck with a bunch of product, then perhaps the buyers (especially those of us in businesses where we aren't at risk of furlough) can agree to pay and credit their payment towards a future purchase so you don't end up on the wrong side of a line of credit.

As for me, I'm still in.  And I really appreciate the offer @fungunnin, but it looks like all my plans were cancelled so I should be in town and be able to pick up on my own.  And if anyone in Central Seattle is sick and can't make pickup, I should be able to drop it on their doorstep for them.

Chris, I'm hearing some rumors that could spell trouble for the coming fishing season. Plants shutting down, etc. Evidently there is concern about bringing in cannery workers from all over the country and the globe to process. And the canneries are worried about anyone working at a plant testing positive. Then they may not be able to get rid of product.  I've heard there are some serious Corporate meetings going on about all this.

In Cordova, the annual spring SERVS (fishing vessal oil spill response training) training has been postponed until fall.

All OK with me.  Do what you have to do Chris.  I'm still in.  Have you considered cutting down on the delivery sites and making us shlubs drive a few miles further?  I wouldn't mind.

Hi folks,

Been some great input here and I do appreciate everybody's support.

I've decided that based on the information we have right now, I'm going to continue with the Group Buy.  I do believe that if we all observe the basic precautions that I've outlined in the post above, we won't infect each other.  That, ultimately, is the point of any cautions or restrictions the may be imposed upon us.

There may be some outside factors that do affect the deliveries.  Travel restrictions is one.  I have a hard time believing that they will shut down the freeways, but it could happen.  If it does, we'll have to pull the plug.  Being denied access to my cold storage facilities is another.  I have been in contact with the owner of one, and he assures me that as long as he's got one person in the ground, I can get my fish.  The other, a much larger facility, will only say that they are following CDC guidelines and reserve the right to shut down and with no notice.

All that said, I am going to close orders on Saturday the 14th and get my ducks in a row (setup delivery schedule, etc.).  I will not likely pick up the fish until the 25th-ish.  On Monday the 23rd, I will text everybody and confirm that I am able to get the fish out and ask that everybody confirm back they are good to go.  After that, it will just be a matter of briefly meeting up according to schedule and moving on Corona-free.

If you suspect you might be a carrier in between the time we confirm on the 23rd and your scheduled pickup, please just let me know and I will find a home for your fish.  We have had some great folks here offer to be "quarantine holders" if necessary.  Heck, maybe leave the garage open and I'll put them in your freezer for you.  If there's no safe way to get the fish to you, no worries. I can probably sell them to somebody else, so don't worry about cancelling on me if you are not feeling well or suspect you've been exposed.

Thanks for hanging in there guys, and I'll stay in touch regarding any updates that might change our plans.

Chris

The effect on the fishing fleet is being felt already in a few ways.  In Seward, a big boat that fishes major amounts of quota had shared with me that they might be put on trip limits, and not to go fishing without first contacting the plant.  I hadn't heard about the workers issue, but that could be a factor for sure.

There's a lot of dock talk about prices this year, and I don't know what to think yet.  It's a year I'm very grateful I'll be freezing my catch so I am not at the mercy of the rumor mill.  As you well know, any rumor is good enough to justify pushing down dock price!

Let's keep in touch this year, I'd like to get your thoughts on the season as it progresses.
