DNR shuts down ALL properties for all reasons
« on: March 25, 2020, 02:21:19 PM »
NEWS RELEASE

MARCH 25, 2020

DNR Closing Public Lands to Recreation Activities

In order to stop the spread of COVID-19, all public lands managed by the Department of Natural Resources (nearly 6 million acres) will be closed to the public through at least April 8.

OLYMPIA – The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the closure of all DNR-managed lands to the public. The closure goes into effect tomorrow – Thursday, March 26 – and will last through at least April 8.

This step is a continuation of the agency’s efforts to protect people by stemming the spread of the coronavirus. On Monday, the agency, along with the State Department of Parks and Recreation and State Department of Fish and Wildlife, closed all campgrounds across the state through April 30.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, the elected official who leads DNR, issued the following statement:

"This was not an easy decision. We treasure our forests and trails and beaches as places of rejuvenation and refuge from the chaos of daily life. But, I cannot ignore the unfortunate reality of what we saw this weekend: crowded trails, people shoulder to shoulder, and large gatherings. This behavior undercuts the sacrifices that Washingtonians of all means and ability are making in order to adhere to social distancing. And it undercuts the heroic efforts of our doctors, nurses, and first responders who risk their lives each day responding to this unrelenting epidemic.

“This behavior also makes clear that, while we have taken drastic measures, we have not done enough when it comes to closing areas where large crowds gather and communicating the importance of staying at home and avoiding physical contact with others.

“The disruptions we are experiencing are difficult and challenging – and unprecedented in our lifetimes. But they are necessary. We must bend the curve. And if we all do our part, these temporary disruptions will save countless lives.”

About DNR Recreation

Led by the Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, DNR manages 1,200 miles of trails and 160-plus recreation sites in 3 million acres of working forest state trust lands and 92 natural areas. DNR trust lands keep forests development-free, provide clean water, and generate revenue for public services and school construction.

B.s.  if i go out hunting on local dnr land next week, there will be NOBODY around.  People going into the grocery store every day for single item purchases, theres your problem.  If weed and liquor stores are open, ill go hunting where nobody will be within a few miles of me.  Screw em.  Is the dnr gonna prorate me on my discover pass?

yeah, just makes you wonder about some people.  Nothing else to do so they all load up and hang out at the grocery store like it was a mall back in 1995.

Liquor stores aren’t open. You can take that one off your list.

I just had a few beers and the couch looks much better than a trail right now.  Maybe that’s our answer.

Exactly why weed and liquor stores are staying open.

Agreed.  It’s a great book, takes about 6 years to read, but great non the less.

I just hate giving that tool shed any praise.

To be in alignment with State and federal guidelines relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, effective March 27, 2020, all Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest developed recreation sites are closed until April 8 or until such measures are lifted.

Developed recreation sites now closed include campgrounds, snow parks, restroom facilities, day-use areas, recreation rental facilities including cabins and fire lookouts, and trailheads. In addition, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest offices are currently conducting public business by phone, email, or through web-based transactions; critical in-person business is being handled by appointment only to minimize person-to-person contact. Lucerne and Fields landing remain open for ferry service.

They can, and do shut down public lands whenever they feel like it. The best one is: Shut Down For Public Safety !

We've given them the power to do whatever they want and it's a absolute BS.
Why do we all need protection? Protection from ourselves?
What happened to our rights to access land designated for public use.

It's wrong and I wish we could take away a lot of the governments power and have them work for us. It's all so corrupt it's frightening.

Yep. Last weekend I believe there was a picture going around of about 10 groups of dumba.... sitting on rattlesnake. I know most of us can and probably do/would keep away from others but the thousands of mouth breathers roaming around acting like this is nothing isn’t going to make this go any faster or easier.

They said I could take a walk! Social distancing!! While hiking on a trail that has a full parking lot where you’re going to pass over a hundred people going up/down ain’t social distancing. You might as well go hang out in Costco/Walmart and cut your losses.

It sucks we’re having to pay the price for it, though.

So theyre closing down the stuff that the normie, non hunting rei maintained hiking trail crowd uses.  Not nat forest in general.  Thats really all thats needed to stop the crowds.  I hunt the nf a lot and never once have i seen some soccer mom and her kids, or some man bun vegan.  They use the maintained trails, areas with parking lots and signs.  I think well be okay, not shut out of nf hunting.

What happened is there is to many people. That's what's frightening.  :twocents:

Civil disobedience may help that problem.....   :chuckle:

I read an article and it says no trail access or “bushwhacking your own trail”. This whole thing sucks!

I thought when they closed trailheads it meant the trails go along with it... so if you're parked there they're either going to ticket you or worse.

It doesn't make sense to keep the trail open but the trailhead closed

An article, or a statement from usfs?  2 wildly different things there.

As far as the no bushwhacking a trail order, th as t cant stand up in court.  Define bushwhacking?  I have no machete, im not whacking bushes, im not making a trail.  Im simply walking through the woods hunting.  Usfs would not try to make a statement like that, knowing its undefinable and unenforceable.

The clarification will come out. I’m sure no one will be allowed in anywhere in the forest.   :bash:
