CCI Shotshells for grouse?
« on: April 23, 2020, 01:54:06 PM »
I know the season isn't until Sept. 1st. However, I have seen various reviews that hunters have harvested grouse with CCI Shotshells like these: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1000876199
Has anybody on this board had success with these?

You probably could, but it would be far from ideal. They are really meant for distances within 10 feet or so. I've shot some of them out of my .357 and they are really fun and I've heard they are very effective on snakes and rats, but again, within about 10 feet.

At that range, you'd be better off shooting 45lc round nose at the ground by the birds feet and then running up and grabbing them while they are stunned.

Save your money if using on grouse. Maybe like stated at 10 feet or snakes n such but any more seems like throwing sand. Also used em in .357 with the birds just looking at me taunting me. Better chance with a regular round.

I’ve only had bad experience with them.. on multiple small games species. Unless you shoot them with your barrel right on the critter.. grouse are fairly tough

I’ve killed a lot of snakes with them in .22mag, .38, and .45. I shot a snake twice a couple years ago with the .38 load with the #4 shot and it got away. I think the larger shot size patterns even poorer than the smaller shot. Last summer I shot both sizes out of my bolt action.44 thinking it maybe grouse worthy. No dice, even at 10 yards the pattens had huge holes in them

Judging from what they do to a pop can I would agree with the above.   :bdid:

At the ranges that they are effective you should be able to place a regular bullet exactly where you want it.

I have killed a grouse and a rabbit with the 44 specials.

You really need to be close like those above said.

I shot at a grouse that was maybe 20 feet away once.  3 shots and no reaction.  I took its head off with a rifle and when cleaning it found shot in the breast.  Penetrated about 1/3 of an inch.

If you reload you can buy the capsules and put whatever you want in them.  I reloaded some with number 8s and 4s.  Seemed like those might work better but i have not done field tests!

As said no they are not effective enough for grouse . Also shot generally doesn't preform well out of an rifled barrel .

Get a good wrist rocket, it’ll do better than bird shot. If you’re out camping, don’t forget a can of cream of mushroom soup to cook em in.

We baited a few mice with Doritos one night at elk camp and got quite a few with the .22 LR in an M6 Scout, but that was about 8-15 feet.  It was payback for running across my face at night.

 :yeah:

Have fond memories of running around with a flashlight at hunting camp plugging a few rodents with my .44 loaded with birdshot!

I tried to get one with a 10 mm, one night.  Missed at 6 feet.  We both sat there stunned for a moment.
