2020 alpine widerness hunting

hey everyone,

I am planning on venturing deep into the alpine this year for deer hunting and was hoping I could post a thread and we could somehow give each other an idea of the area we all plan on camping and hunting to avoid the ultimate disappointment of getting way back to our basins and finding another person already set up camp there. now I know that no one wants to give up their secret spots to the whole site but maybe we can pm back and forth and at least give each other a general understanding of the basic area we are planning on spending our time this next September. this mite feel like an invasion into private information but I think we would all benefit from sharing a little information as far as our hunting plans go. also If any of you have any tips or tricks to hunting this vast area they would be greatly appreciated. and to the ones who want to hate on this idea you just simply can ignore this thread but remember next September if your hunt is spoiled by some other hunter you maybe could have avoided the whole situation just by sharing some info now 5 months ahead of the season. thanks to anyone who does share and or helps me and my hunting partners out and good luck in all your hunting adventures this year.

I think this is a great idea.  If anybody has a monster whitetail buck located and doesnt want me stumbling into their honey hole and ruining their hunt, just pm me info, and maybe text or email screenshots of google earth with pins dropped so i can be sure to stay away.

On a serious note, if you've got a spot scouted out I would not tell people where it's at so that they will avoid it even through pm. I get the idea behind it but I think you'll get burned on it

While I understand the goal its an impossible expectation on public land. And since Hunt wa makes up a very small amount of the people that hunt the ALW it would never work, except maybe get you an idea of where the deer are at since you also asked for inside info and helpful pointers. 


BTW I used to hunt the ALW every year back when it was good hunting. Its not what it used to be. Good bucks hang in small pockets that are hard to get to. I averaged a deer every 3-4 years and I know the country well.

Hansen, it's not rudeness that leads to these replies.  The closest you could ever come to a response is to state where you are going and hope some would offer advice on the subject.   No one successful is ever going to let you know where they hunt.   However, if you have a remotely decent choice, anyone who hunts there or within 2 miles of it is going to feed you dissuasion and disinformation.  They'll try to drive you out of the place with claims of multiple camps, outfitters there or the certitude that it's deer-less.

The lengths people will go. not just to protect their exact spot but to drive others away from anywhere near it, is epic.   Closest I ever came to doing what you are saying....  i found a very old post on another forum about a location I was interested in.  It had been accessed by a particular outfitter.  It appeared by all my research to have been abandoned by that outfit.  I reached out to them to see if that was still the case as i would not be inclined to pop up my camp on top of an outfitted group of guys.  They replied it had been abandoned for multiple reasons.  Which of course you should note all but guarantees it wasn't a hot spot to begin with.

Your plan shouldn't be to try and insulate against others out there with discussion.  You should have 3 strategies.  First, have a hunt planned with an A, B, C set of location alternatives to move to should you find camps, no deer or trail closure.  Second, be prepared and capable to hunt at such distance, including off trail, including some sections that are uncomfortable in order to shed the majority of those who would be willing.  Third, if you can prioritize as much time afield as possible.  Most backpack camps are short term.  They are long weekend.  They disturb deer but often they re-emerge nearby in a couple days.  If you can outlast the competition, what you found scouting may still be in the area, let it rest.  Oh and get there first if you can.  Some will turn and take their B option if they see someone arrived before them.

Best of luck to you, it's an awesome hunt... that most people do once.  Some twice.  And a dern few repeatedly.

Best you'll get around here is gear, fitness and strategy discussions.  Hell this site will pic the most obscure of pictures and within a day or two tell you exactly where the guy was sitting.  As a journalist there's one W that will always get left out...  Who, what, when, why.

Since you said September I am gathering you mean the high Hunt. As you can hunt the wilderness during the reg season also. Also you might think that the high hunt is a large area but when you consider it is only certain wilderness areas and Outfitters, High hunters, and hikers are there it really isn't that large. IMO

If you don't find someone else hunting in the same general area it's for two reasons: 1) you got there first and they will find someone in their "spot", or 2) the secret spot sucks and isn't worth hunting.

Be prepared to find someone in the same general area.   I've only found one or two spots that no one else went to and it was because it was a hell hole.
