49 bears?!

Went out yesterday put on 12 miles to only see 1 moose i think its safe to say I choose the wrong area any help would be appreciated at this moment.

I've spent a lot of time I  huckleberry the last week and seen very little sign. I would guess activity will pick up over this next week..

man I hope so yesterday was brutal, see I spend most of my time in 121 not 117.

I had the tag a few years back. Didn’t fill it but did see some small bears and sign other bigger ones were in the area. Find the burns or clear cuts that have steep draws and don’t have a road running right down the bottom of it. They like cover and water and will spend lots of time in the bottoms of the draws where you can’t see them or get in after them. But they will come out of those to feed on the grass growing in the burns, cuts, roads. If you have trail cameras it always helps to set a couple up maybe even somewhere you aren’t going to hunt right away so you can check them in a week or two once you exhaust your other options.  And as always try to stack the odds in your favor by spending every minute you can out there. I have seen a few bears early in the morning, a few close to dark and lots of bears in the middle of the afternoon when some guys would be sitting back at camp drinking beer waiting for the evening hunt. where i was it was thick with no clearcuts so i walked until i found one which was 5.5 miles back

There's lots of cuts in the unit that are easier to access. Buying that map sounds like a good idea for you since you aren't real familiar with the unit.  The map at this link shows you some potential access points. https://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/locations/gmu#region1gmu

Its been tough, definitely not an easy unit to hunt. I've put well over 40 miles on the ground in the unit so far and only turned up a few bears. It'll get better in June.

Either way it's a hard unit to be successful in, one of the lower success rates out of the spring bear units. Something like 10% or so.

Fall is a different game for bear. Not to say the unit doesnt hold good numbers it's just not an easy unit to find em when its spring time and they're on the move. The unit consistantley ranks low in hunter success during the spring season for a reason.

Really, i think thats all northeast units now, easier to get a bear with a fall tag now since the august 1st opener.  Bears concentrate on berry patches in august, that you can pinpoint any year.  In the spring with different melting and greenup cycles, its always different.  Spring bear was the "slam dunk" hunt until we got the august 1st opener.  Now a guy has better odds with the fall season if he gets after it right off the bat.

Speaking of berries, i just found miles of huckleberries in idaho at a high enough elevation that i think they may still be a good bear draw come the august 30th opener, at least on z good wet year.

Turkeys are everywhere. Season ends in 3 days.

Turkeys are everywhere. Season ends in 3 days.

Liken dmoua said, turkey wont be open next week. They're all over the unit but most of them have been hunted hard. I've already seen hens with chicks which means the turkey rut is coming to an end.

Ya im heading over Saturday morning. Figure I can find a turkey in. I'd rather have tags I'm my pocket.  I picked up a map from bear paw and have been checking a lot of areas via satellite.   Good luck to you guys.
