New Elk gun
« on: June 11, 2020, 01:44:47 PM »
Selling my dirt bike to fund a new elk\bear  hunting rifle. Thinking about a .300 win mag should have about 3,000 for scope and gun. Any suggestions?

You can get a Browning X-bolt or a Tikka T3X and top it with a Leupold VX-5 or VX-6 spending under $3k and have a rifle that will shoot sub moa. Then put the rest of the money you saved not buying custom toward something more responsible or not and use it to go hunting.

.300 Win Mag.👍 I picked up a .300 PRC and ditched it after 3 range sessions with the Magnetto Speed. It can’t hang with the .300 Win Mag.

Give Benchmark a call in Arlington. They have incredibly accurate barrels. I don’t think most main stream builders can get a custom done by this big game season.

That's a pretty generous budget, you can buy a pretty nice setup for that kind of money.

Couple questions:

- Do you reload?
- What weight range for the complete package?
- Do you have a specific action that you like?
- Wood stock or synthetic?
- What ranges are you comfortable shooting an animal at?

.300 RUM in Rem 700.  You will never need another gun.  Spend some money on the scope!!

A 1000 dollar rifle will kill an animal just as dead as a 3000 dollar rifle.
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

Yes you can always get by driving a moped to work...but...if its worth doing it's worth over doing...I vote full custom

Have you considered a chasis rifle ?

Rbros 338 rbh will be my next elk rifle

If it were me, id grab one of these bad boys.  Its light enough that you could slap a big *censored* heavy scope on it, and its threaded so you could add a brake, and get a suppressor later on when youre feeling moneyed up again.

The .300 RUM at SAAMI spec is a failed cartridge. Throat, Mag length, quality bullet length, seating depth is a frikn Caitlyn Jenner doll. The math is a total yard sale. The shorter case and increased diameter of the .338 RUM puuuuuurs like a freshly divorced...... I’ll leave it at that.👍😉

Browning X-bolt Hells Canyon 300 wsm at $1100 or bump to 28 Nosler in McMillan version for $600 more.   Top with choice if turret optics and go shoot.

Or look for used custom .

Agree too late to be positive of getting custom built this year unless you find parts in stock from other than mfgs and locate small smith thats not busy.

Thurman,
If I were you, and I'm not;
Take an existing standard length rifle that you like,
Have it re-barreled to a 33 Nosler or a 338 Norma Magnum. ($600)
You will then really have something unique that packs a punch.
I took an old Sako Finnbear and re-barreled to 33 Nosler and it shoots like a house on fire.
270 grain ELDXs at 2950fps out of a 25" barrel.
Take the time to check out the ballistics, they're pretty darn good.
Call any time (425) 894-3330.
Good Luck.
Rob.

You should be able to get into something like a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 30 Nosler/300 PRC/300 Win mag, and depending on what you want to scope it with, stay within your budget.

This place seems to have them at as good a price as I've seen and includes free shipping. https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/197910

Can't say that I've always been all that much of a Christensen Arms fan but they seem to be producing some pretty accurate rifles now and for $1699 you pretty much get a full custom.  I can tell you first hand, you certainly can't have a custom, or even semi custom, built for that.

Why so complicated for a rifle? I've taken dozens of Elk with my old Ruger 30/ 06 out to 400+ yards. Optics is what will help you the best and time behind the trigger.  :twocents:

Did we just become best friends? The RUM is the end of all things that roam the earth.

I started out with a Rem 700 that I won in a raffle. Shot like crap, so I re-barreled it. Shot that barrel out and re-barreled it again. Put a new stock on it. Blueprinted the action and topped off with a VX6 HD 4-24 x 56.

Prints .5 MOA with 200g accubond bullets at 3218FPS. Haven’t needed the long range capability with that one as the last few animals have been off hand at close range, but I have shot it out to 1370 yards. Scary accurate.

The 300 RUM is my “someday” moose gun
I’ve been using my Kimber mountain ascent as my go to hunting rifle for everything else I’m hunting currently
But the RUM does certainly shoot very well

Nothing wrong with the 300 Ultra. Beats the 300 win by a good margin, even in a SAAMI chambered rifle, even more in a custom chamber. Would serve you good on that future moose hunt, and would handle anything the OP would ask of it.👍😉
Bottom line, so many cartridges will work for the OP's purposes. But to disparge any of those "suitable" calibers is just silly, and usually comes from those that spend too much time on the web or range, and not enough time shooting game. Real world experience some would say.
😊

Someday Im going to the Yukon

It’s my bucket hunt

I love my 270 WSM Kimber
I’d use it for elk
I also love my .257 Roy
And it would also drop an elk
It’s all placement

Go big and fast .338 win mag.  I have a savage bear hunter stainless/fluted barrel, aluminum bedded stock with a on/off muzzle brake, topped off this a vortex 4x16 viper.  With the brake on less kick than 30-06 but you better have ear plugs, I always carry a pair of foam ones around my neck.

I bought a lightly used Fierce Fury 300 win mag and put a VX 5 on it. In it under $2500. It’s a really nice combo and even I can shoot tiny groups with it. I have a rem 700 adl in 300RUM that I was thinking about souping up but couldn’t match the price for what I was getting in the Fierce and guaranteed .5 MOA

Good Call !  Learn how to use those dials or order the cds.   Zero at 200 rotates to 700 in first rotation if I recall.
Use Berger 215’s and good to 1000.   I’ve had good luck with box of factory 215 Bergers even.   3” group at 500.
