45/70 guide gun loads?
« on: April 12, 2009, 05:43:44 PM »
Hi, It seems that Teacherman has a new toy.  A 45/70 guide gun.  It somehow has become my task to reload some rounds for him so i'm wondering if anyone has reloaded for the 405 grain SP bullets by Remington.  This will be a Bear gun used both in Washington and Alaska.  Possibly even Canada.  If possible I would like to use Reloader 19.  I use a lot of it and pays to be able to buy in Quantity.  But let me know what you use and what really works well.  Don't worry about Teachermans shoulder, it might give him humility. :chuckle: :chuckle: :IBCOOL:
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me

Just keeping your retirement busy,  :chuckle: I've been looking around for loads that you could load up. I don't think reloader 19 will work but reloader 7 would. Hodgson and IMR seemed more common. From what I have found so fair I think I'm leaning toward the 405 gr. FNSP Kodiak. This is what I'm looking at;

Load 10203 in caliber .45-70 Government

LoadID 10203
Bullet Kodiak FNSP
BulletWeight 405 grs
Powder Hodgdon H322
PowderWeight 52 grs
Primer Winchester LR
Brass Make Starline
Barrel Length 18 (inches)
C.O.L 2.55 (inches)
Velocity 1900 fps
Group 1 (inches by 3 shot at 100 yds)

Gun Info  Marlin guide gun

OGW 1688 lbs
IPSC PF  769.5

What do you guys think? I want something that will stop a tank, or better yet a large grizzly or brown bear.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
