Looking for a boat....
« on: June 23, 2020, 06:07:45 PM »
Ok....  Here we go... I’m a fishing junkie. A complete Walleye slaying maniac! With salmon and steelhead on the side. Took a huge break from it, due to work and raising children. Now I’m back to single and only one child at home. I’m looking for a boat that I can Walleye fish the big lakes and also salmon fish the Columbia. Want to keep it at 20K or less. Suggestions?

I really like my smokercraft pro lodge 16.5’. Put a minnkota on the bow and max out the horse power in the rear and it’s a great boat for most everything but the ocean. Unless you like to fish 4 people all the time.

I just bought a Smoker Craft Pro Lodge with a 40hp Yamaha.  So far so good.  This is my first boat and I didn't want to spend over $20k either.  I plan to upgrade in a few more years to something with a cabin.  I've had it on freshwater and salt.  It'll work just fine.  It doesn't have tons of room but three guys can fish in it no problem.  Smoker Craft isn't one of the higher end boats like an Alumaweld or North River but it is good enough and it should resell well, especially with the Yamaha motor.

I bought last years model with the motor for just under $16k.  AFter tax, license and all the necessary accessories to get it fishing, I'm pushing $21k.
I know I've lost it, let me know if you come across it

Plenty of fish have met their demise in a Smoker Craft, I've owned two and they fished great for what they are.  If you can go with the welded versions they will have less problems over time.

When I bought my current boat, the prices for a new and well taken care of used boat were just about nothing, so I went new.  It may be a different situation now, so used is a good option when you can save money and get into more boat.  Used are also nice because they almost always include a bunch of stuff like sonar, rod holders, downriggers and all the other things that cost a small fortune to add to new boats.

for what its worth, I fish out of a 17' Bayliner.  $150 for a Pantara trolling mount on the back, put some v-locks on for down riggers and plenty room under back seat for second battery.  Not a "fishing" boat but I fish family of 5 with 4 rods in the water all the time.  The give/take..  My alumaweld was 22k but blew the motor and didn't have the cash years ago to fix..  My bayliner was $5k.. Its not aluminum which is the obvious huge down side.  But 15k in my pocket.  I've seen guys with the 18.5' with much more room and handle big water fine.  Still can pick them up for under 10k.

Point being, a lot of boats that are not "fishing" boats fish great and don't demand the same cost.

My mother in law has been asking me to sell a boat that my father in law left behind. I don't know the year off hand but its a 19ft spectrum super deep with a 4 cylinder inboard gm merc cruiser engine, Honda kicker. I believe he had bought all of the fish finder gps stuff for it a couple years ago. He planned to fish the Columbia and bigger lakes with it but passed before it could really happen. If your interested I can get more information.

Looks very similar to this one: https://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/74781-19ft-spectrum-avenger-sd-super-deep/

Unfortunately the dealership still has my boat and are taking their sweet time getting to evaluating it. I won't have pics until Wednesday most likely.

You may want to consider selling it yourself.  A dealer will always offer less than market value as they have to store it, inventory it, pay someone to show it and then have enough left over to turn some profit.  If it's in decent condition, my experience is they sell quickly.  I have had a much easier time selling decent boats than cars or trucks, especially this time of year.  The last two boats I sold, I put a free Craigslist add, sorted through the circus of responses and one boat sold to the first guy that looked at it and the other boat was the second showing.  I didn't put either in the water, just a quick show and talk in the driveway.
