Floorless Shelter ground tarp?
« on: June 24, 2020, 09:44:20 AM »
Looking for input on a ground tarp or covering for my floorless shelter.

I'm running a Seek Silvertip, and have been using Tyvek as a ground sheet.
I have yet to purchase a nest, and probably won't due to the weight.
I'm looking for other ideas besides the loud Tyvek. Just big enough to keep my sleep system from ground contact.

I like the idea of a bathtub design.  Luxe has a cheap one that weighs 10.5 oz.

SEEK also has their version of Tyvek, which is slightly less weight at 8.1 oz.  But doesn't carry the small sidewalls (not sure why this intrigues me so much)

What are you guys using? Anyone run a tub type covering?  I see it being handy when it's raining hard and I can't find a spot with good drainage.

I have a luxe and nest. The nest is 7 oz more than the ground sheet so I think its worth it for the full enclosure to keep bugs out

The Silvertip full nest (no half nest option) is 35 oz.  Thats heavy, and can't be sued with my stove (so they say).

I've looked at the Luxe half nests and I'm waiting to hear back from them on some more specific measurements to see if they'll fit my Silvertip.  Looks like they will.
They are much lighter and cheaper, I just wish they weren't made over seas.

So far I like mine and from what I can tell, it should work in the silvertip

Which nest are you running?
Looks like the Pyramid will work and maybe the half hex.

Try running your tyvek through the washing machine and air dry.

Go with a lightweight bivy like a TI Goat omni bivy so you do not even have to set up the tent if the weather is nice and it works great at keeping your bag and pillow clean.

I use those light Weight emergency blankets. They are about 8x10 green on one side and silver on the other. Weighs about 8oz. And they only cost like 10$ so if I kill an animal I use it as a ground tarp for processing if needed or an emergency shelter or survival blanket if needed. Not super quite I guess.

I have this one and run it with the XL hexpeak

So you have to tie off the top to a tree limb then?  Isn't a small lightweight tent better?

Try running your tyvek through the washing machine and air dry.
:yeah: wash it and it will be as quiet as a sheet on your bed at home

I washed it last night, made a huge difference.

Now I need to get my buddy to do the same.  He tosses and turns like a fish out of water.

Not much for cool factor, but when I was able to spike out in the back country for 1-3 nights these were great.  Some paracord and a few limbs or rocks and I had my choice of A-frame with floor, simple ground cloth and larger A-frame w/o floor for two.  I've successfully spent the night through screaming wind, driving rain and hail under one of these (though with driving rain you do have to judiciously push off the pooled water as they do get a bit form fitting).  Works great as a ground cloth when boning out and good for wrapping meat for internal pack.

They are so handy, compact and lightweight in the original packaging I still usually carry one in my day pack.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

It goes inside the shelter and ties of to the peak and outer wall of the tent
