Smoked ice cubes
« on: August 25, 2020, 09:33:15 AM »
I brought this up in another thread and did not want to hijack it

How to make smoked ice cubes for Bloody Mary's etc (might be good in bourbon, never tried it as im a neat guy)

Now some may think you just put a bowl of water in the smoker, sorry but that is incorrect as you only have a small surface.
Whats needed:
Metal bowl, Metal strainer or Colander (this is optional), Water, Sacrificial ice cube trays, Freezer (preferably not the one in the house) and a Smoker
Step 1, Pour water into ice cube trays and transform into a solid in a freezer  :chuckle:
Step 2, Get smoker going after water has set up
Step 3, Put ice cubes into strainer and place strainer over metal bowl (preferred by me) or just put in metal bowl
Step 4, Place bowl into smoker and smoke till ice cubes have transformed back into a liquid (whatever setting and whatever level of smoke you like, experiment)
Step 5 pour smoked water back into ice cube trays and transform back into a solid in the freezer (note the freezer and contents will take on a smokey smell (baking soda is your friend after) so will the ice cube trays
Step 6, Make up some Bloody Mary's of your choosing and use how ever many smoked ice cubes you prefer.

Trick is smoking ice cubes makes every layer of water as it melts absorb smoke

That's a pretty ingenious idea. I love a good Bloody Mary. Used to get the most incredible mix from "the Garlc Lady" in Portland or Vancouver? Unfortunately they went out of business.

I love a good Bloody Mary or 2  :chuckle:
They are just fun to make and so different each time and the skys the limit for what you can put in/have with them
I am not a vodka guy and prefer to use either Bourbon or Tequila (bloody Maria), i have heard that Gin is very good but im not a Gin guy
I am also fairly lazy and use Spicy V8 with a mix or use V8 tomato with flavored mixes, condiments tend to be savory for me, but like i said whatever cranks your tractor (as my wife says).
These mixes have been my go to for awhile, the classic i got before at costco and have ordered the others online

I'm all for savory, and i like to be able to call it a meal.
BTW, a Bloody Mary party, with all of the condiments, mixes, booze, rim treatments, all laid out is a real hoot.

Oh man! I too miss the Garlic Lady.  We used to buy her Dirty Martini mix by the case.  For bloodys we're big fans of Demitris, it makes a good steak marinade as well.  Going to have to try the smoked cubes soon.

Garlic Lady's Thai Spicy was the bomb! It was thick from all of the pickled veggies that were ground up into it.

Several years ago I was heading back to northern Minnesota to ice fish, ride snow machines and drink at a buddy's cabin. I'd done my research, and found a bar about 15 miles away that had been voted the best Bloody Mary in northern Minnesota. We rode the sleds there for lunch, ordered four bloodys and she said "Sorry, we're done making them for the day". Huh???!!! :o
I explained that I'd come half way across the country for the experience. She spent the next 15 minutes getting all of the ingredients out of the cooler and took care of us. It was damn good!

This stuff is pretty good too.  I've only seen it on the shelf in MT but I'm sure they'll ship it anywhere.

At my folks place back in NH, we served Bloody Mary and the Boys - a bloody Mary with 4 large Prawns. And the mix was quite unique. We made tons of them on Sunday brunch, probably more than all other drinks combined. The smoked cubes sound like an interesting addition.

P-man, were you familiar with the Garlic Lady? She was in your neck of the woods. Sold all kinds of pickled vegetables, spicy condiments, etc.

Yeah, we always bought her stuff at the Vancouver Farmer's market. Then a couple of local stores carried it. I haven't seen any lately and I don't go downtown anymore. I was most fond of the olive juice for dirty martinis. She also did some spicy garlic cloves that were good in martinis, too.
