Hoodsport, chum slaying
«
on:
September 23, 2020, 09:33:01 AM »
Thinking a buddy and I need to make a trip with the boys to fill a cooler with dogs for the smoker and some sore arms. A plan would be put in at potlach, run north....anchor or drift outside the line of shore fisherman and float herring, shrimp and jig, cast spoons etc. Any info on timing....like when are they thick, rolling over each other and what methods work best. Thanks.

End of October-beginning of November depending on rain. I know people fish herring under a float in the salt. Green or purple jigs work too. I mean snagging works best but might be frowned upon. I actually think Chum are a great fighting fish even if they don’t eat as well. I use them to make dog food mostly. Might have to check if the ramp at potlach is open. If I see anything start running I’ll let you know.

Used to fish this a lot years ago... you have a good plan, I used to fish out of a float tube when it got crowded.
Bobber and jig will work OK, really when they are there, almost anything works.

Yea first weeks in Nov. Hopefully the boat launch you mentioned will be open by then. It is currently closed and no one knows when or if it will be opened. Let me know if you hear anything about that.

i'd give it another week at least. before the state rolled over to the tribe and kicked the sports fisherman off the river, i used to do really well on the skokomish between halloween and the 2nd week of november. they should be in the canal a little earlier than that.

Some dudes hanging around Kennedy creek looking in the water yesterday. Still too early imo. Last week of October is usually the earliest I see them

Quinault and Cook Creek are a (obviously) different river, but timing is usually the same. Had Only 2 last week but I am hearing reports of a few showing up in the Taholah commercial fishery, they are on the way!

Can anyone find an answer on if or when the Skokomish tribe is going to open up the boat launch at potlatch. I was told it was still closed due to covid, yet their casino is heaping full of customers?

Big mistake when the game dept sold to them. I believe we put a lot of money in for that hatchery too. And for what? They wont let us launch. Too bad all the casino customers were not all fisherman, we could boycott the casino. But there must be a way. Me and a buddy have been calling everyone we can think of and writing letters for a month to no avail! Does not make any sense. We always treat the skokomish with respect ,and my buddy always buys extra fish from them when we get back to the launch. I might be repeating myself, but the only answer I got was up there in a conversation I had with a tribal member. He said the launch was closed due to, "all the white guys dumping their garbage, and we dont want to clean it up"! I am hoping that is not the views of the whole tribe. But to let only tribal members launch??? There is something wrong!

You can launch at Union or or Twanoh as well. Not that far a run either way. I've done bobber and jig, corkies in glow with red dots or chartreuse, and very small herring or anchovies under a bobber. I haven't played there for quite a few years but chum can be great fun to pull on.

I have checked out Union multiple times during the chum run, but the parking was full up. Not sure about Twanoh, but I have a small boat and it seemed way too far to launch there, have only looked at it on a map. Still the skokomish launch is perfect, just need it open.
