.308 a-bolt question.
« on: December 22, 2020, 06:24:44 PM »
I have a 89 a-bolt medallion with a 22inch barrel. I cant seem to find what the rate of twist the barrel has. Ive been shooting 150 grain bullets and im wanting to shoot some 178 or 180 grain bullets. Accuracy has been so so but dont want to shoot my lot of heavier bullets if they wont be any better. If ammo was more readily available it would be no problem, just go shoot them and see. Just a question i had. Ive read online about how to find your rate of twist with a cleaning rod but dont want to bother if someone on here knows.

I’m guessing it’s a 12 twist

So I would be better off shooting lighter grain bullets, rite?

Slower twist “smaller” bullets
Faster twist “bigger” bullets.

180’s are probably the upper end depending on the specific bullet, I’d say most should be fine besides maybe monos. Berger says their 185 classics will run in a 12 twist

Anything below 175's might be limited to 800 yds.  FYI.   Shot 150's and 168's 1 moa or less at 500.  Tumbled at 1000 with 20" barrel.
