New guy to hunting, gonna try duck. Where do I go?
« on: November 06, 2007, 12:22:10 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm brand spanking new to hunting and thought I'd try waterfoul this year. I have a friend that is fairly new but relies on other friends for locations to hunt. Well, we thought we'd try it together this Saturday but we are having trouble finding a reference for public lands that are legal for duck hunting. Is there a reference somewhere? I've seen the maps of wildlife refuge etc. but I don't know what anything means. The GoHunt maps aren't all that helpful to a newbie.

We are in King and Pierce county area.

Any help for the new idiot?

Thanks.

Darren

I just added the counties as I forgot to list them initially.

We live nearest King and Pierce counties. We would like to hunt duck, not too picky but Malard, Teal, etc... would be great.

I might add that we are fairly well outfitted with a boat, waders, decoys and whatnot. We are also well trained in weapons safety so we aren't a danger to anyone... well, not usually :D

I am new to this forum & am rekindling my love for duck hunting. I am planning on a trip down to the Nisqually Delta this weekend. Would like to team up with someone. Don't have a boat but do have a couple dozen dekes & an ambition to check it out. I am not familiar with that area either so it will be a scouting trip.
Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

I'll let you know what we decide as far as what area we intend to go to. Right now things are up in the air.

Looks like my buddy and I will be heading out to the Nisqually Delta on Saturday. We'll be out there early. Maybe we'll see ya around. Not sure where exactly we'll be but he has a specific plan that I haven't had a chance to discuss with him.

Looks like the tide swing will be only about 6 feet so it shouldn't be too bad out there.

Well, we hit Nisqually today. Got out on the water at 6:00am. Someone was already in the spot we were hoping for so we went a couple hundred yards beyond. No luck for us but the other guys got 4 or 5 I'd say. We still had fun though. Got the dog used to salt water and it was his first time in a boat. He did real well.

We saw some Mallards, Teal etc. but none got close enough to us, we didn't have the greatest spot but we didn't want to get too close to the sanctuary.
