F150 Problem
« on: February 01, 2021, 10:51:04 AM »
2018 F150 2.7 Eco-boast.

I think it's in "Limp Mode".  Shifting is totally hosed up.  The wrench Icon is on with a message "shift mode not available  - see manual".  Can't find that in the manual.  I got a service appointment but not until next Friday.

Can I reset this by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery?

Any ideas on what the cause could be?

Yes you likely could, but if it is in limp mode there is something going on that it REALLY doesn't like.

You might be able to clear whatever it is, but it'll just go back into whatever limp/safe mode as soon as the truck identifies the problem again.

Also no appointment till next friday, like 2/12 next friday? Oye...lightweights...Bring it to me, I'll look at it Wednesday.

PM me with your VIN #.

That's a great offer, but I doubt if I can limp to Duvall.  I can probably limp to Epic in Everett.   Meanwhile I can drive the Subaru.

I see I'm not the only one that has had this problem:

Service Procedure
1. Check the vehicle build date. Was the vehicle built on or before 15-May-2018?
(1). Yes - reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using the latest version of the appropriate Ford
scan tool.

• NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION
SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE
PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE
COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN
FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

(2). No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01 for normal
diagnostics.

Do you have another vehicle you can drive? If so, have Ford roadside tow your truck to the dealer. IME they tend to have a tech look at it quicker if it is sitting on their lot. I went through this with an ‘18 F150 that I had issues with.

I do.  Thanks, that's a good idea.

Ford will tow. 1-800-241-3673 is the roadside assistance phone number.
That TSB doesn’t apply to your VIN near as I could tell. I didn’t spend a ton of time looking but I think it doesn’t.

To follow up, I got this into the local Ford service dept. and they did a great job working me in without an appointment.  They determined the problem was caused by rodents chewing on some of the wire bundles.  Best guess is squirrels because they left a bunch of peanuts behind.  They are fixing it as time permits.  Est. four- or five-hours labor, of course not covered by warranty.  I guess I can’t blame it on Ford.

There will be retribution on those responsible.

I have one if you want to borrow, well broken in and proven.

I haven't found a trap for the lovely neighbors that feed them peanuts though.

Thanks, I'm ordering one right now on your recommendation.  What do you bait it with?

pffft.

I had mouse problems on an old ford pickup last fall that had been parked awhile. It had a miss in the engine, ac vents would not change where it was blowing air, stuck on default defrost, and the right turn signal wouldn't work.

I filled maybe 1 to 2 gallons of a five gallon bucket with seeds and such mice had packed into my old Fords ac fan motor housing. Used liquid tape and some ingenuity to fix a few vacuum lines that had been chewed through. Replaced a completely chewed through spark plug wire and found a few mystery wires that were chewed through including turn signal wire.

Good times. I pretty much have two mouse traps under the hood at all times when Im not driving it which has caught multiple mice since.

I had a friend who had the same problem with squirrels. Turned out his auto insurance covered the repairs. May be something to look into.
