Using you waterdog for shed hunting
« on: March 10, 2021, 03:57:42 PM »
I am an avid waterfowler and have always hunted with a lab.  Are there any negative habits that a waterdog might pick up shed hunting?

All in the training. We use our GWP’s for everything. Good to have the foundation set for one thing before mixing it up though. Some day I may have a pointing lab, but time is passing by...

Definitely not! It actually teaches them positive traits that aid in duck hunting. How to use their nose, how to use their eyes, sharpening their brain by learning new things. All things that translate to retrieving ducks too. They use their nose and eyes for finding ducks. Constantly learning new things equates to a smarter, better, duck dog. The best hunting dogs aren't just good at duck hunting, or just upland hunting, or just swimming. They are well-rounded. It is like a football player who also runs cross-country. Does the cross-country running make the football player a better football player? Absolutely!

Along this line, we used our dogs for fur as well as feather and did a lot of rat hunting with one particular pair we had. Out upland hunting and I had popped a quail. Sent the boy to retrieve and he made this weird jog into a bush, came right back out and finished the retrieve. When I sent him out to ‘Hunt Em Up!’ again I went over to see why. Still steaming unfortunate dead Vole laying on top of the snow...

Second all that has been said. Through shed training I really noticed my dogs learned to be more visually aware.
