I took a first-time fisherman out last week who's lived in the PNW his whole life. He and his wife made a substantial donation to a church youth group for their mission trip to Kentucky where 23 teenagers and 7 leaders helped rebuild homes destroyed by tornados in 2021.

So, my youngest son and I took him out for a salmon fishing trip. Of course, it was the day after WDFW shut down chinooks. But that didn't matter. He had a great time and together the 3 of us limited on cohos and pinks.

He also happens to be a former Young Life staffer.

Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. - Psalm 127:3-5

Another update:

I took another first-time fisherman (he hasn't fished in over 30 years and never out of a boat) out last week who's lived in the PNW his whole life. He and his wife made a substantial donation to a church youth group for their mission trip to Kentucky where 23 teenagers and 7 leaders helped rebuild homes destroyed by tornados in 2021.

So, my youngest son and I took him out for a salmon fishing trip. He had a great time and together the 3 of us almost limited on cohos and pinks.

He also happens to be a former missionary.

Let's just say he was very pleased with his adventure on the water.

Also, just a reminder, that if you'd like to make a donation to help me continue to make these introductions to first-timers to fishing, check out the original post. I AM NOT A GUIDE. I am a full-time ministry leader that donate all of my gear, boat, gas, and funds to allow these trips to happen 100% FREE. I specifically try to introduce pastors, ministry leaders, and Christian business leaders into outdoor adventures.

Blessings!

Yep, you guessed it - another update! It's been a busy summer!

On this day, my son and I took out a teenager who was asking if he could get a chance to fish with us on the boat. He's only ever caught 1 salmon before, but never on a boat. So, we called him up when an open seat was available and spent 4 hours on the water together. Let's just say he left with an armful of fillets and grinning ear-to-ear.

He caught his Personal Best sized fish, a tank of a pink salmon. What a fun day!

Going to get this thread back up and running for the summer. I'll be taking new fishermen and their families out for free again this summer. If you have any tackle boxes, tackle, fishing rods, reels, or other gear you'd like to donate to this cause, I'm happy to take whatever you can donate.

If you know of a pastor or ministry leader that would like to receive some help or a grant or some gear or take a trip out fishing, let me know. I'd love to help!

Just wanted to give an update on this thread as "Fishing with First Timers" continues to grow.

This spring/summer I had the opportunity to take a number of pastors, ministry leaders, and others who are involved in serving others out on their first ever fishing trips for salmon, trout, bass, etc. And, thanks to the donations of many of you Hunting-Washington members, I was able to give away rods, reels, tackle, tackle boxes, crabbing gear, and more.

Enjoy some of the pictures from this year and a brief summary of the folks who went out:

1. First trip of the season, I hired a local guide out of Bremerton to host a group of 3 pastors for a ling cod fishing trip. All expenses paid - thanks to the donations of financial partners at my ministry website. These 3 pastors are leaders loved getting a day on the water. None of them had ever fished for ling cod prior. Our guide, Matt Messing at Messin' Around Charters did an excellent job.

Update Continued: Fishing w/ First Timers 2025

2.  Next, I had the joy of helping a father and his sons learn how to salmon fish in the puget sound. He and I used to serve together in ministry before he went to work in another field. Over the last few years he's been looking to learn how to fish in the region. So, he bought a boat with his father and began gathering the gear on his own. Then, this spring, I had the opportunity to meet up with him, show him how we run our boat, give him some tips and tactics, and then spend some time on the water together...

The smiles on his little boys' faces were priceless when they began catching fish. What a gift to be a part of it and to watch them celebrate together. These are the things that will remain lasting memories for their relationship forever.
