Pinks from a boat - avoiding the Puyallup circus….
« on: August 06, 2021, 06:49:19 PM »

Just curious if any of Y’all have targeted Pinks off the mouth of the Puke? I just don’t feel like joining the combat fishery on the banks. Any tips or suggestions? Thanx.

IME fishing right around the mouth could be productive, but I don't think you need to be too close to the mouth. The glacial color sits in a layer on top making the water basically opaque. There are some really shallow spots the closer to the mouth you get- to the point of some of it being like actual "flats" where the fish aren't likely to hold much anyway. And I never found fishing that close to the port area all that alluring. You'd be better off sticking to nearby areas between Dash Point/Ruston/Maury Island triangle. Plenty of schools holding or moving through those areas- and plenty of people targeting them. Or sure stick to the deeper areas off the flats and you should find fish.

You can’t fish close to the mouth, check out the boundary line in the regs.

I’ve fished to the right side of the mouth. More or less the opening of Foss waterway by the refinery. Pinks would be stacked in there along with boats.

In typical WDFW fashion, you have to hire a legal expert to decipher, but believe it's open as of Aug. 1:

Commencement Bay Closure: Waters east of a line bearing 215° true (195°30' magnetic) from the Cliff House Restaurant on north shore (approximate position 47°17.85'N, 122°25.90'W) through Sperry Ocean Dock (approximate position 47°16.43'N, 122°27.37'W) - Apr. 1- Apr. 30, and July 1-July 31: CLOSED to fishing for salmon. Aug. 1-Mar. 31: same rules as Marine Area 11 - ENTIRE AREA.

Use the phone app if you have it, much easier than the pamphlet + emergency order route.  It also shows boundaries pretty well this year, seems they fixed the wonky boundary lines I was seeing last year.
