Early Chukar and Old Guy Season
« on: August 21, 2021, 12:41:11 PM »
Hi, two quick questions, first, I thought there was an early chukar season in the Snake River country, did this stop? It seems like WDFW used to have an early Sept. 15th opener in the extreme Southeast. Secondly, I didn't know there was an early eastside pheasant opener for people 65 and older. I think it runs Sept. 20-24. Is this statewide, or only in release sites? I'm 67 and I didn't even know this was a thing. I wonder if there is a huge advantage to hunting early. Right off, I would assume there would be a sizable reduction in pressure, allowing for better access to hunting spots. Does anyone here have opinions on this?

Thanks.

Long ago in the late 1960's and into the early 1980's WA opened chukar season in September. Second or third Saturday of September. Dad and I, and a few of my friends never missed it. It was usually really hot by noon and we were worn out by then too, so we would find someplace to let the dog(s) get cooled off and get some water then head home for the day. Good Times!  8)

Thanks, I remember those days and always wanted to give it a go. I may opt for an Idaho license some day.

The Eastern WA pheasant hunt Sept 20-24, 2021 is for seniors 65 and over, or hunters w/ disabilities. Yes, there are substantially less hunters out at that time. Great for the older guys and gals to get a crack at them birds before the general hunters go in October. Get out there and go bust a few!!!

My wife and I will both be out after pheasant on the sr/disabled hunt.  Hopefully we will get out for more than just a day or two.  Never have done this before, should be interesting.  Saw lots of "sign" that hunters previous to us were successful when we went last year during the general season opener, so it must have been a good hunt!!  We shall see.  Looking forward to getting out!  So is the dog!!

I hope you do well. I have a turkey hunt scheduled the weekend of the 18th in Stevens County, and I might try the Sherman Creek pheasant release site near Kettle Falls if it is open. Good luck to you.
