copalis spring bear??????????
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:01:22 PM »
Well, I have not been doing so well with the copalis unit thus far. I have hunted five days and have yet to see a bear or even much fresh sign. The security guy told me that he has not heard about any bears taken yet and he has only seen one small bear run across the road this year. He also said that he did not expect them to really start moving until the middle of May. How have any of you been doing that drew copalis? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jason

When the protein starts hitting the ground they will get more active.   :chuckle:

TRy hunting as close to the rez boundaries as you can. The bear will move in and out of the rez. Some of the areas you might need a tree stand to see better. Good luck! ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was back down there sunday and I think that the hunting is starting to heat up. The first spot that I stopped I decided to try a fawn in disstress call and within ten minutes had one pop out at a couple hundred yards. I watched him approach to about eighty yards before I stopped calling figuring that was close enough. He stood there looking around like he was wondering where his free meal had gone for about five minutes before he lost interest and walked away. I just wish that he was bigger, I guessed him to be maybe 100 pounds or so. I will attach the pictures of him tonight. The second spot that I stopped at I almost walked right into another small bear, it busted out and was gone in a flash. I also found some fresh sign so I'm thinking that they are moving finally.

As Rick was saying, wnw corner of the unit is where I would send ya. It seems like the bears I heard about being taken in earlier years came out of the Aloha Ridge area and north. Good Luck, the Promised Land is anything but that. They didn't have any hounds out when I drew the unit. It is just so flat, swampy, & brushy that you can't see much and the bears don't have to expose themselves to feed.

Again, good luck

Here is a look at him. see what you all think. you can't tell from the pic but his ears looked close together and that stump that is just to his left and infront of him was only about 12 inches accross.

"It is just so flat, swampy, & brushy that you can't see much and the bears don't have to expose themselves to feed." you ain't kidding about that. I've hunted the Wenaha for spring bear before, boy this is a differant ball game.

Nice pics Jason. Sounds like a pretty good day, even with no shots fired, gotta love calling them in.

I'm sure we'll be seeing some blood in the next pics!

Good luck.
