437 Blacktail?
« on: September 17, 2021, 09:56:02 AM »
Hello,
Long time forum reader, first time posting here. I知 an adult onset hunter, going out for my first time ever this season. I知 34 years old, have spent my whole life outdoors; backpacking, camping and hiking. I was born and raised in California, caught the urge to hunt while living in Montana, and have been in Washington for 4 years now, finally getting around to doing the damn thing!

I知 planning to hunt 437 for blacktail, with modern firearm. I致e read Scott Haugens Trophy Blacktails cover to cover and been doing tons of research. Also spending every available moment out scouting. I知 familiar with the area, and happy to still hunt and hike in through the thick stuff. Just wondering if anyone hunts this GMU/has any tips for a new hunter? I am planning to stick to state land and hunt clearcuts in the mornings and evenings, very ready for some cold, wet times. As I致e been out scouting, I have been seeing deer, but very few other people. I知 wondering if anyone hunts this area, or maybe I知 just in completely wrong spots? Or maybe things just explode come October and the area will be overrun with hunters? Any insight about the area or tactics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

If you're seeing deer, you are not in the wrong area. You will definitely see more people once the season opens. Opening weekend will be a zoo and then it will taper off from there. If you have the ability to hunt during the week do so, your competition will be minimal then. I'd hunt the first few days and then focus my efforts on the last week of the season, that's when the bucks really start to get moving. If you have really crappy weather, be out there, it gets blacktail moving. Good luck and keep us posted on your efforts.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

I agree if your seeing deer keep at it. I've hunted all over 437 an there are deer. Don't forget to look a little farther off the Beaton path in some of the less traveled areas. Most people will just walk the gated roads. Get off the road an explore. Good luck. Also don't forget the 448 holds alot if seer also.
