Huckleberry Cow moose hunt !

Leaving in two weeks for my son in law and wife’s cow moose hunt, drove around the area today, neat looking unit.  Have a camp spot in the southern portion of the unit, anyone have any honey holes for a couple cow moose??

Changed the title a bit, got good info on places to go, thanks again guys!  Question, after trying to eat my 8 year old bull moose a couple years ago, and talking w a good friend about his big cow moose he killed. We were both not impressed w the meat, so my question, is there any ethical arguments about shooting a 1-2 year old cow?  I want the wife to shoot a young moose so we have a better chance at good meat.  Thoughts?

did you have any of it cubed? I have found on old mature bull elk it needs to be put through the cuber 2-3 times and you have some nice tender steaks!

I didn’t, but I should have. The burger was great though, I only add 5% fat so it’s brittle but taste good.

To answer your question….nothing wrong with shooting a young moose

With that said, I’ve shot two bull moose and both were tough.  One was a young bull and the other was a big boy.  They both taste delicious and preparation was the key to making them edible.   Cubed is a great way to go.  Canned is an even better way to go.   We made a lot of jerky too which is amazing.   Hamburger and stew meat is always a show stopper as well.  Not a fan of huge roast unless you brine and smoke….to make lunch meat like pastrami.   

Point being….Big moose taste great too.   If I had that tag, the size wouldn’t matter near as much as it’s location in respect to the road.  Above the road….it dies.

If I every get drawn for a cow moose, would definitely being targeting a yearling cow.  As for the cuber, very worthwhile.
Made Moose Parmesan the other night and ran it through a small hand crank cuber and it was very tasty and pretty tender.

Yes, we are setting up camp Friday morning, prob leave the commie side of the state around 2or 3 am, should be around a 5 hour drive.  Appreciate any PM's, I'll be checking.

Well, getting to know a little about the area a bit. Son in law saw a small bull today, zilch for the wife and I. I’m really surprised how many muzzy elk hunters are here, haven’t seen any elk sign. I’d say we were seeing lots of deer but the locals would hate me for that, so, haven’t seen any!

Who said cow moose hunting was boring!!!  Holy crap, sometimes there is a horny bull with the cow you shoot that isn’t very happy w you!!  That was crazy! My son in law shot his first animal ever, a big cow moose this morning. We went up to get her and didn’t even notice in the thick stuff that a 4-5 year old bull was 10’ away from us and pissed! He chased us off the mountain in a frenzy! Holy crap that was fun!  The bull never left her side, we were kinda stuck, even after shooting he wouldn’t budge.  Luckily we found some guys who were helping a blind guy that had a bull tag! Perfect scenario!  After about 2 hours, he made it to where we were, shot the bull at 25 yards and the work begun!!!  So cool! One more cow to kill!  Seen 5 moose today alone, 3 cows two bulls.
