Ever find a legal crab while razor clam digging?
« on: October 29, 2021, 09:02:07 AM »
While clam digging, I occasionally find a crab but I just ignore it. Has anyone ever found a legal crab while digging? That would be a good reason to bring a crab measurer with you while razor clamming  :chuckle:

Yes, but the crabs will be trapped in the troughs of water on the beach, not buried in the sand.

I've never even seen a Dungeness while razor clamming.  Maybe I should keep my eyes open in the surf a bit more.  I did think about taking the rings and trying off the docks or jetty, but then remembered how much work that is.

Not true, I have dug quite a number that were buried in the sand. Usually they are small but I have gotten a few legal ones but that has been over a lot of years. Odds are poor at best.
I have also crabbed out of the pools formed behind spits. It has been hit or miss with me doing that with more misses then hits. Count on getting soaked. Great fun when you are young but kind of loses its allure when you get older.

Also there are some days when there are way more crabs than others. I have found 4 or 5 crab on one tide before while digging.

I got into a whole bunch at mocrocks last year.  it was a super crowded dig (i think the only one we had before the red tide shut down).  tide was still going out, then i noticed there was a sand spit appearing about 20 yards out into the surf.  my buddy and i waded out there and started seeing shows everywhere.  the only problem was about half of the "shows" were from dungies buried under the sand, and i chopped a few of them up with my shovel before i got careful about where i was digging.  they were everywhere though.

i've pulled in a few surf perch fishing as well. sometimes you can feel them walk across the toes of your boots standing in the surf.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Yep, but very few.  I did however see a guy wandering through the tide pools with a dip net a few years ago, and he had a few legal crab.

My family and I found hundreds of females one evening crab tide a couple years back. There was barely any surf, a big minus tide, and the sun was setting.  It looked like there were clams about every foot or so apart that were not quite "showing", but you could see the sand pumping in the sunset reflection.  We were excited initially...but NOPE!  Hundreds and hundreds of female dungees!

We used to get keepers in the pools on Copalis more than anywhere else.  That was in the '70's though.  Haven't dug there since before the mountain blew.
