Some people don't tolerate wool on skin well, my wife being one, but I have always had wool cloths of some sort. They work well.

I have some fleece clothing that’s 25 years old. It’s tough and keeps me warm. The newer stuff doesn’t compare to the old stuff………transitioning back to wool.

Underlayers are fleece and synthetics. Outer layer is wool due to durability and less flammable.

My two favorite deer hunting items are a fleece vest and fleece hoodie in camp orange.

Real cold wool pants.

Used to wear fleece camo, but had a lot of ticks,even when I sprayed well. Switched out of the fleece and have no problem now if I spray well. Not sure if the fleece seemed to attract them or not, but won't be going back to it.

Now that I think about it, I have burned/melted several pieces of fleece over the years. Wool not so much. Not saying it may not have been coincidental with other factors, mind you.

I’ve never heard of anyone not tolerating merino wool; it is like cotton next to your skin for feel but with all the qualities of wicking and odor resistant as old fashion wool.

Grid fleece is also a great wicking mid base layer to couple with merino wool base layers.

Wool is great, but it isn't cheap and likely not the best solution for everything.  I find it hard to argue with your $10 fleece hat that lasts 500 years is warm and comfortable, doesn't absorb any water and everyone owns about 10 of them already.

Fleece and the synthetic stuff makes me sweat when its against my skin. I avoid it for base layers where merino wool keeps me comfortable whether I'm hiking or sitting.

Joking aside, if you spend a lot of autumn nights in the woods you just cannot avoid burn holes.  (Melted boots are a different problem...)
