CRV has gremlins
« on: January 18, 2022, 07:42:59 AM »
A few months ago, my wife called me to come help her because her 2017 CR-V would only creep along. I got there and jumped in, and it felt like it was in limp mode. No power, and would only go maybe 10 mph. Turned it off and started it again, and it was fine. Took it to the dealer, but no codes and they could not recreate it. Since then, it has happened 3 more times. Here's the kicker; every time it has happened at the exact same place, turning left at an intersection a couple miles from home. What the??

We had the exact same circumstances with my wife's Ford Edge.  I realize that hers was a Ford, and not a Honda, but it sounds exactly the same.......it went into what is called "limp mode".  It happened half a dozen times over a 3-4 year period, until our local mechanic diagnosed it in about 3 minutes.  Turning the engine off and back on again always cleared the problem.  Turns out it was a bad speed sensor on the transmission.

Was there a certain condition that would cause it?

Not that I remember, but it usually happened when accelerating from a stop, or a near-stop.   The last time it happened, turning it off and back on again did not clear the problem.

It's just so weird that it's happened 4 times, all at the exact same intersection, going the same direction. The intersection takes you from a steep-ish downhill to a left turn, so possibly a fluid level thing?

That's a possibility.  Do an internet search on the symptoms (limp mode), and vehicle make and model.   You will probably find at least half-a-dozen possible causes, including the "fluid-level thing".  When I did that for our Edge, I found an exact description of our problem (after it was fixed).

Pretty obvious fix...avoid that intersection.  :tung:

I had a bad positive battery cable on my pickup that was giving me mystery problems. It looked good, but I guess there was some corrosion down in the strands. I found out how important a good battery and connections are to make an automatic transmission work properly

Is it a turbo model?  Known issue on those.   Fuel getting into engine oil.  Oil level gets too high and goes into limp

If that's the case, you certainly would not think that turning the engine off and then back on again would clear the problem.

It's either that or there's a 5G tower somewhere nearby.
