leupold scope question?
« on: February 13, 2022, 11:09:27 AM »
I purchased a Leupold VX3-HD 4-14, rifle scope to put on my new Savage ultralight 110, I plan to hunt with however the only ammo that I have been able to acquire is the 147 grain Hornady match I want to use the 143 ELDX to for hunting. My question is if I send in the info for the custom turret from the 147 grain bullet will it make much difference when I can actually find some 143 ammo? It doesn't seem like the 4 grains would affect overall performance unless it has different powder any feedback would be much appreciated.

I would definitely wait until you found the ammo you're hunting with, the 143's. Even if you have to bite the bullet and buy a box or two at marked up prices online. :twocents:

I would wait until you can get the exact fps etc.. from the bullet you will be hunting with. You only get one free CDS turret.

:yeah: Even if it was same grain bullet (which it’s not) going from one type of bullet to another will change trajectory. Add the weight difference and you will probably be ordering another turret. Be better to be patient and get custom for your actual hunting round

You could always redeem your free turret, then when you get 143’s, order another turret. Leupold charges $80 for additional turrets.
But yes, as others have said, I wouldn’t count on them being the same. There’s a chance, and you could verify, but I wouldn’t count on it.

I agree, wait.  The turrets have built in error already due to the data they will accept along with changes in elevation and temperature.  When you add a different bullet on top, it would be something I wouldn't be excited to hunt with.

I would just build a dope chart when I'm zeroing the scope for those rounds.  Easy to do with a few rounds or if you have an accurate chrono and free software.

I have been seeing the 143 ELDX in 6.5  fairly consistent lately. I would wait until you have the ammo you want.

I'm assuming thats the caliber your after?

The two variables that will change the drop difference between the two loads are the velocities and ballistic coefficients. The weight difference alone makes no difference but the lighter bullet may be faster.

Thank you guys for the replies, I kind of figured that I need to wait until I can find some 143 eldx ammo, at least I have some 147 grain match bullets to fire from new rifle, I actuall bought the ammo a few months before I had the gun!

Another thing to note also is barrels can and will speed up during break in. Ive seen as much as 100fps. I highly recommend getting a hundred rounds down the pipe before data collection for your cds dial.
