Hunting tip for rifle guys in the weather
« on: February 17, 2022, 06:25:12 PM »
So I got some stitches in my finger last week. Doctor told me about these things called finger cots aka a finger condom. Got me thinking that I should 1. Keep a few in my first aid kit that’s always in my pack. 2. I’d imagine it would be perfect to put on the end of your barrel to protect it from debris and water going down(haven’t tested this theory yet, but have seen guys put electrical tape over the top)Anyone else have any tips like this?

Been using them for many years on my muzzle loaders, and all my muzzle break rifles.

Have you tried the barrel rubbers/condoms KNO? They don’t leave the sticky crap on your barrel and are reusable.

I grab a half dozen of my son's water balloons in the summer and stash them in my pack.  I've tried tape but electrical doesn't seem to stick well and the good tapes leave goo that grabs dirt.

Good 3M electrical tapes doesn't leave the sticky mess that the cheap stuff does. I've been using that for years. It has saved me a couple times when I've slipped in mud and jammed the barrel into the ground.

I have tried the cots but was unimpressed, some fell off others tore. Must be bustin brush that was the culprit.

Ditto.

Only found one brand of electrical tape that consistently sticks to rifle steel with no sticky adhesive left.  Have used it for years, only roll I have is out in the 4x4 and I'm not going to walk out there tonight, but think it is Scotch 88 (or 808?).

It has kept out mud, wet snow from limbs, blizzards of falling larch needles, etc.  All of my rifles have it on all the time now when hunting.  I cut it to width of crown with a small split tail on each side, as little as possible to blow off at the shot.

Apply it on warm metal if possible.  Remove the muzzle cover at the end of the day to allow circulation and avoid condensation and rusting in the bore just inside the muzzle.

I take two shots to dirty the barrel, then put on some sort of vinyl electrical tape, one over the crown and 2-3 wraps around the barrel/brake.  Doesn't noticeably affect accuracy and keeps the junk out.
I do open the bolt in the truck and camp for circulation.
I leave it on all season until I shoot.

The water balloons work perfect.   They slip right on, and you don't have to mess with getting them placed
just right like you do with electrical tape.  And no sticky residue............
