Home made deer stands

Over the years I’ve come across quite a few DIY stands and blinds.  Some of the stands are only 5 or so feet high.  I assume these are for hunting but it seems low.

I’ll sell you this one. Insulated with milgard windows. Overbuilt bottom side to hold 4 posts for elevation. We were going to do 12 feet. Pipe dream gone bad      .

5 feet seems awful low.  Maybe it is just too see over some brush for getting a clear shot on a specific trail.  When I was a kid my stepdad had a network of stands in the areas he hunted.  Homemade would be an understatement.  He always built them out of whatever he found on the ground.  And they were ridiculously high up the tree.  Like 30'-40'.  I was terrified to go into most of them.  He basically took stout pine branches and nailed or screwed them into a tall tree until he got high enough up to suit himself, then built a tiny log platform to sit on. 
Harness?!!  We don't need no stinking harnesses....

1 pallet
2 2x4's
handful of 16 penny nails
done

I carry twine, a little folding saw, and a few screw in steps. I climb trees when I find one I think will produce and will work for my style stand. I climb the tree and cut branches off and use them to make a cage, seat, etc. using twine to tie them in place. I harvest most of my blacktails out of this style stand and I don't have to worry about someone stealing it.

Found this deep in the mason unit, wouldn't have held me I don't think. My daughter likes risking her life though. Close to 25' up

I know alot dont like it and consider it trash, but I enjoy finding homemade stands in the woods. Most of them are from years ago and are in shambles, i always wonder about all the success/failures the hunter had there, like finding a piece of history for me.

Back in high school my buddy fell out of one and broke his neck. He was paralized for 2 weeks. Wont go near one anymore.

My grandpa had a “blind” that he used to build, some on here know of it. I remember as a boy hiking into this spot a week or two before the season. We would cut down trees, limbs, etc. and pile them around an old Ponderosa that was about 6 feet around. I’ve told stories of this “tree”, my mom unloading a 30-30 without fireing a shot on a huge 4 point, my dad and mom sitting in there only to have a buck sneak in behind and sniff my dads neck, freaking him and the deer out only to have it blow snot all over my dad as they locked eyes. My great grandpa and myself watching close to 200 deer come up the route only to split and go around “the tree”, taking the two different trails that were only 40 or so yards from the tree. There was a fire in this area a while back, a DNR fella found the plaque that hung on the big tree, it told the story, they left it standing when cutting down the others, it had minimal fire damage but everything around it was burnt bad. My great grandpa sat under that tree for the first time in 1917, its a spot that dozens of family and friends have sat for over a hundred years. Many stories and memories have come from that tree. To this day close to 150 or so bucks have been killed there. When ever anyone goes there they follow the procedure, go in a few weeks before the season, gather and cut your branches, limbs etc and pile them around the base of the big tree, when hunting it, get there a few hours before daylight, climb inside, pull the branches around you, lean against the tree and take a nap. When you wake up, it’s magic!
