First Time GMU 371 Alkali Cow Elk

My 17 year old son drew this tag for October, and I've been searching the threads for info and already called the rec center about getting our access pass.  We live in Spokane, so it sucks that you have to go in person to get the pass, my son works weekends so we never have a day off together.  And with gas prices what they are, having to go there twice just to get the dang pass is stupid.

To further frustrate matters, the links to the information sheets on the website don't work.  The Training Center is aware of this, they are going through a website upgrade apparently, and so it's temporarily down.  No one can say for how long.  So it's pretty dang hard to find info at this time.

I did find an information sheet from 2017 in these forums, but I can't get maps showing the different areas until we go in person... whenever that may be.  Would anyone here be willing to help us out with maps from previous years?  You can PM me if you prefer. I'd love to get a feel for where the different units are located, do some scouting with Google earth, etc. before we head over there.  Naturally any advice is also appreciated. But with the open country I imagine doing a lot of glassing early and late, and then hiking to more secluded and remote drainages mid-day.

That number has a recording of the open training areas. It can change daily, usually in the early evening. The training center is open for recreational access an hour before sunrise until 2 hours after. You can select three open training areas to access. All firearms must be registered with the range police to take them onto the training center.

Sagerat, that's super helpful - thanks.  It looks like the lines that separate the units are roads, some color coded green and others ~brown.  Does that color relate to whether they are open or closed on a given day?  Also, I see some black triangles marked as gates, but I believe you have to check in at the main entrance each day.  But once you check in can you then drive on larger roads and enter at the gates?  Thanks again.

Brown lines are roads, green are boundaries and roads in some cases but not always. You can’t access through any of the other gates, check in at the main gate and access the entire area via the interior road system. You use to be able to use the other gates but that went away after 9/11.

Don’t forget to be respectful to the guys at the gate. They do a good and important job.

2. have to register any gun used in the range.
3.gun has to be cased and zipped up while driving
4.when you go in to hunt each time you have to be checked in at the main gate. Make sure all licenses, insurance and owner papers are up to date.
5. after the gate you must pull in to the reg desk to show your hunt permits.
6. then must go to down range office and pick out 3 hunting areas you prefer and make sure they are open. There are 16 with two permanently close for live fire. If you decide to hunt other areas you must call the range officer and change them.
7. DO not speed. 25 MPH on legal roads and they will ticket you. A friend got a $125 ticket for doing 35.
8. you are being watched via sattal. They can tell if you are out of your chosen area and also in the live fire restricted areas.
9. if you get an animal you have to register it at the live fire bldg along with a tooth where you also have to log out.
There is a check station near the front gate if open they will pull the tooth for you.
I guarantee you will be checked by the Army Core police through the day. They run the property for the military. They do not give warnings. Get caught violating the rules and you will be banned.

so tell us what is wrong? We hunted 5 years ago and the year before that. Spent 18 days total scouting and hunting. I do not believe the military made the rules any easier. Its not their way. Please advise the current procedure.

There hasn't been a down range office in many years and the old VHS video died about a decade ago. All your check-in and registration is done right at the main gate office. Other than those items everything else is more or less accurate.
