another fishing area closes due to quota
« on: July 13, 2022, 06:16:37 PM »
Speechless, so everyone..........if you want to fish go out the first couple days of any AREA OPENING because if you catch fish you won't have any other opportunity. If you don't catch anything WDFW will keep it open until you show there are fish and then.............down it goes.

WDFW FISHING RULE CHANGE
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia, WA 98501
wdfw.wa.gov

July 11, 2022
Salmon fishing suspended in south-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11) beginning July 13
Action: Closes salmon fishing.
Effective date: July 13 through Aug. 2, 2022.
Species affected: Salmon.
Location: Marine Area 11
Reason for action: Estimates of landed catch to date indicate that 58% of the harvest quota (1,625 of 2,816) agreed to in this year’s List of Agreed Fisheries (LOAF) has been landed. Feedback from Puget Sound Sports Fishing Advisory Group and other members of the public indicated a desire to preserve Chinook fishing opportunity for August. Therefore, WDFW is suspending the fishery through Aug. 2 to preserve opportunity for later in the summer season.
Additional information: Marine Area 11 will reopen Wednesday, Aug. 3, on a Wednesday to Saturday schedule as listed in the 2022/23 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet.
Year-round fishing piers, Dash Point Dock, Des Moines Pier, Les Davis Pier, Point Defiance Boathouse Dock, and Redondo Pier remain open as listed in the 2022/23 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet.
To be informed of fishery rule changes as they are announced, anglers are encouraged to sign up for WDFW rule update emails at wdfw.wa.gov/about/lists .
Information contact: Fish Program, 360-902-2700

Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license, appropriate to the fishery. Check the WDFW "Fishing in Washington" rules pamphlet for details on fishing seasons and regulations. Fishing rules are subject to change. Check the WDFW Fishing hotline for the latest rule information at 360-902-2500, press 2 for recreational rules. For the Shellfish Rule Change hotline call 360-796-3215 or toll free 1-866-880-5431.
Individuals who need to receive this information in an alternative format, language, or who need reasonable accommodations to participate in WDFW-sponsored public meetings or other activities may contact the Title VI/ADA Compliance Coordinator by phone at 360-902-2349, TTY (711), or email (Title6@dfw.wa.gov). What kills me is..........tribal nets will go in right after sportsman closure because............well the sportsman test fishery is completed and now we have to give our partners their share.  3% of the population gets 50% of the fish.

Creel reports don't show anywhere near 58%.  Not sure how they manipulate the catch numbers but they must calculate a pretty big fudge factor on top of what they observe.  Politics like everything else.

Encounters..
Average 5-10 to 1. Minimum.
They baited us into believing this year was going to be a stellar season of opportunity...with good fishing. Buy your license....blah blah..
Well it's great fishing... it's the opportunity that is disappearing daily. For rec guys anyway.
Area 5 is soon to follow according to sources.
All our seasons will soon end up being a mad rush of a couple days...

I have a suspicion of why the quota's "allegedly" are getting burned up fast ..but it will get my blood pressure up to talk about it.

I’d imagine a different user group is going over there quota and the sportsman get punished for it.

Devil's advocate here, fishing seems to be abnormally good in many areas and there are tons of boats on the water.

Or, as many said, it's encounters so there could be a bunch of smolt being projected to have been caught as opposed to adult fish bonked.

Did you read the release? It says "Feedback from Puget Sound Sports Fishing Advisory Group and other members of the public indicated a desire to preserve Chinook fishing opportunity for August. "
So did tribes infiltrate the advisory group? Or did they stop at agreed upon Encounters?  SMH

I’m pretty bummed on this closure as it is my normal spot. I think they underestimated the return because the fishing was pretty dang good. The big fish haven’t even moved into 11 yet.

I’m glad they leave the piers open for me since I’m land locked. At least I can practice my casting all day. Lol

what’s your point? I’m a bit confused, are you saying the tribes won’t fish as usual?
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I fish area 11 alot and have had no "encounters" with shakers at all. I'd estimate 25% of the fish we've hooked have had adipose fins ("natives"  :chuckle:) and were released.  Most of the fish have been 10-20 pounds caught trolling hoochies or plugs. Everyone I stay in contact with has had the same experience.  They are inflating the numbers way too drastically.  I just hope they don't close down area 13 next.  This state gives me heartburn.

Shut 11 down the day before 9/10 opens .
That's going to end well. Gee.. Wonder why areas are seeing increase in pressure.

Don't get me started on the ma 4/5 debacle...

Wdfw is playing chess with the salmon season's. We are just pawns.

"Year-round fishing piers, Dash Point Dock" I don't think so. It's been closed for 2 or 3 years.

I also heard that wdfw are using their test boats and are now utilizing the tribes help in testing how many clipped keepers are being caught in relation to unmarked or shakers and using this data to calculate mortality and overall quota. One of those tester groups has been having a much higher ratio of unkeepable fish that is counting against the sports fisherman. Then you have our fish being caught in Canada and Alaska and that hurts fisherman in our area too when calculating our quota.

WDFW is nothing more than a group of paper educated idiots.

They swim in a world of paper fish.

Morons should all be fired and a private contractor should manage our resources.
