.257 Roberts worth buying?
« on: August 25, 2022, 02:21:43 PM »
I found a very nice Winchester Model 70 Featherweight XTR in .257 Roberts that looks like it would be great for a kid to start with for deer.  The price is right for the rifle, however it seems brass/ammo is very, very scarce and if its available, it is very expensive!

I am wondering if you guys think this caliber is maybe fading away?  I am also considering a 25-06 or a .270, seems brass and ammo is not as scarce, but the 257 Roberts has been calling my name since I was a young boy.

I would say if you reload....go for it.  If your buying factory ammo....go with a more common caliber.

With that said, the odd ball calibers were significantly easier to find ammo for during the COVID mess as opposed to the common calibers.

definitely easier at first but pretty difficult now because manufacturers are pumping out the common stuff.

I think the 257 Roberts is a really cool cartridge, and perfect for a young hunter, but I'd probably go with something that's a little more common like the 270. Unless you can find some 257 ammo and buy a couple hundreds rounds at the same time you buy the gun.

Youth + hunting suggests low volume.  If you have to pay an extra dollar a round vs something common it may come out about the same over  the next few years.

Well the old saying is true, strike while the iron is hot.  I should have just bought it at lunch cause someone else snagged it after I left.  Lesson learned. Someone got themselves a beautiful rifle.

I have a .257 roberts on a Remington 700 action. Very light recoil and it is super accurate with 120 grain nosler partitions and 110 grain accubonds. Very good deer gun

A .243 / 7mm-08 / 6.5 Creedmore would be great for a kid to start with.  All available ammo wise.  .257 has been a bit of a challenge to find ammo for as I have one.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
