AK Caribou 2022
« on: August 29, 2022, 04:42:19 PM »
I was able to take my 17yo son on a Caribou hunt a couple weeks ago due to the generosity of someone I met at a banquet who was willing to loan me his raft.  Very grateful to that person who I met about 5 years ago.

We didn't see a lot of Caribou, just the two we shot and another cow.  But we saw enough.  ;)

I wish I'd prepared ahead of time for how to preserve antlers in velvet.  It was 6 days after the kill that I applied some VelvaLok and it seems to have worked, but I left too much flesh on the skull cap and it smells rotten.  I've applied a bunch of salt and next step is to apply baking soda.  I hope I can get the stink out!

Get another bottle (or two) of velvalok. You’ll be surprised what that stuff can save. Then let the antlers dry for a long while. They may have a very mild odor still, but I’ve had success doing a last very light spritz of velvalok after a good long drying period after the initial preservation. Nothing beats original velvet if you can save it.

We saw two spike bull moose on the trip.  Both my son and I agreed - they were so big all we could think was "glad we aren't hunting those!"  :chuckle:  And those were just yearlings, a mature bull would be bigger still.

Once again, stud bull and congrats on a safe and successful trip!

Looks like a great bull and a fun adventure!  We hunted August bulls a few years ago.  We just peeled the velvet on ours.
