Baitcaster guru's
« on: November 09, 2022, 10:04:12 AM »
Picked up a rod / reel combo last night and thinking the reel is messed up . It's an Okuma Coldwater Low Profile line counter
No matter how tight I crank down the drag I can still pull line off with my hand . I think It could be the drag washers but would like a second opinion before I order up a new set of Carbon fiber washers from DragMasters .

Had the same issue with an Okuma Coldwater CW-203D. Sent it in through Outdoor Emporium to a third party reel repair guy...all he did was remove the line and rewind under tension. At least that's what the note on the repair bill said.

I'd try that before taking it apart.

Fortunately the eBay seller refunded me since it was "broken" and I ended up only paying $35 for the repair so, pretty good deal I guess.

Those two things, and I put a small piece of tape on the line about 5 or so loops in when putting new line on. This stops the line from slipping on the spool.

:yeah:
The only thing I would add is use good quality tape, don't use scotch, painter or paper types of tape.

All my reels that do not have tie off post get 15' of mono backing tied with a reverse choke. Never slips.

This was the problem , thats why i love this place . I unspooled all the  braided line and it wasn't even tied onto the spool  . Re-tied it using a 5' piece of Mono as a backer and all is well .

99 percent of the time I will wind on a little larger diameter mono on first and tie a line to line knot with the line I plan on using. Prevents slippage greatly.

Glad to hear that was all the problem was, I put 150 feet of 25lb mono on my Coldwater and then fill with braid, they hold an awful lot of braid otherwise, always seems a waste.

True deerlick lots of line. When it's time to change line. Transfer to another reel and use the back half of the other end minus the backing
