660 deer question
« on: October 16, 2022, 10:00:31 PM »
Are the deer all over the unit or just in certain parts? First year hunting this unit and having trouble locating deer constantly in the unit. I don't usually have trouble finding deer but for whatever reason I'm having a hard time seeing more than 4-6 deer in this unit. I've hunted capitol forest the last few years and would see 15-20 deer a day. Are the deer numbers just not there in 660?

I'll get it figured out. I'm thinking it must just be the weather as it's been hot since August. But even with the hot weather I still feel like I should be at least seeing 3-4 deer in the early morning and 3-4 deer late in the evening and I'm not seeing that which is strange to me. I'll keep at it and figured it out. I'll post success pics when I get it figured out. 3 tags to fill mine and my 2 oldest kids.

There's lots all over the unit. They like to hide in this weather. Give it a few days they will start moving

One example of this weather. When hunting the hot weather we went out for early muzzy. In a different unit. Only deer we saw was in last 7 minutes of legal light. Saw 2 does. But hunt that same unit in modern when wet weather roles through and seems like there are deer around every corner. Weather is playing a big role so far this season.

I appreciate all the responses. I'm glad to hear it's the weather. It was just crazy to me because I've hunted vail and capitol forest in the passed and although when the weather was hot in those units it was more difficult to find deer I would still find a descent amount. In this unit I hunted all day Saturday and Sunday and only saw 4 deer. 3 on Saturday and only 1 on Sunday. Can't wait for the weather to get nasty!

I've hunted 660, mostly Melbourne A line and C line for elk for almost 20 years and haven't seen more than a handful of deer in that time. It's beautiful blacktail country in the clearcuts but there just aren't hardly any deer in there. I've seen their tracks but not what makes them. In that time I've only seen 2 bucks, one small fork and the other was a 3 or 4 point but he wasn't sticking around. This year during early ML elk I think we saw 2 does. Good luck finding them.

I've hunted that unit about five times on half-day hunts.  Never saw a deer but there sure are a hell of a lot of people in their rigs in long lines driving up and down the roads.
I'm psoitive the unit has a very good deer population.  Getting away from other hunters is key.

There's a ton of people in there, the last 2 years have been ridiculous. But that being said I can't emphasize enough to sit behind your binos and spotter. You would be surprised how many people I see walk to the end of landings or even through cuts and stand 50yds from a deer and have no clue. Look for bedded deer not the ones you see standing in the open and you'll find them  patience is key with these deer
