Puppy Food ?
« on: January 13, 2023, 10:14:23 PM »
My vet would like me to start feeding my pup a puppy food with more grains. She's a little over 4mo old now. Currently feeding Blue Wilderness ( what she was started on). My wife saw the bill for a 11lb bag of food.($40.00) says we need to find something else a little cheaper. I don't want to feed her crap, but there must be something a little less expensive. Thoughts?

We've had good results with purina plus puppy chow and science diet puppy chow. She's got tons of energy, a great coat, teeth and gums look great. Shes gone from 12 pounds to 55 since late Sept. Shell be 6 months the end of the month.
We did hear from our vet and our puppy class trainer that the grain-free foods are causing neurological issues in some dogs. Most of these manufacturers have never done clinical trials on their products like the larger companies do. I don't see any reason to spend the extra $$ on them.

There's no need to feed them grain-free unless a health condition exists, I had a dog with constant ear infections, went to grain free and they cleared up.  I've used Purina Pro Plan puppy on my last 2 dogs, been great, no problems.  Use the purina pro or purina active/focus? on 4 adult dogs now, no problems, love it.  I used to buy more "top end" but this is a great alternative, not crap, but not crazy spendy, although it's gone up 10-20 per bag in the last year +, thanks Trump! :chuckle:

I was feeding Haley purina pro plan when I got her because that’s what the breeder used. Last summer purina’s availability was bad & they really jacked up their prices. All I could get here was the 18 lb bag & they were over $55 for it, which is just stupid. Their 35 bag is about $68 here, I believe.

So I switched to Country Vet Naturals. They’re a small pet food manufacturer in South Dakota. Their puppy food has the same nutritional content as the pro plan & Nutri Source, but is much cheaper. I get a 35 lb bag at Scheel’s for $40, vs a 34 lb bag of pro plan at Petco for about $68 & a 30 lb bag of Nutri Source at Scheel’s for $65.

Haley’s getting good results from it, she’s packed on a lot of muscle this year w/ very little fat & the vet says it’s been great for her. I think you can get it in Washington @ Bi-Mart or delivered from Chewey.
