Land set beaver question
« on: January 16, 2023, 07:19:00 PM »
I’ve had a large cage trap with castor in the back about 2 ft from the dam. 2 nights in a row they fixed the dam but ignored the trap. Are they trap shy? Bad brand of castor? Also covered trap as to not bring unwanted 2 legged attention. Thanks for any ideas.

That set can definitely work, keep after it. Maybe don’t do the dam break, just the set :twocents:

I’ll definitely give that a shot. Guess my mindset was it would get them very close to the trap but maybe they are too busy fixing the dam to care about anything else. :dunno:

They make routine checks of their areas and will cruise by at some point. They’ll also smell the castor and investigate

Do you have your trap on a bank slide?

:yeah: I’m no beaver expert by a long shot. If they are not as busy maybe they will take the time to investigate.

Thanks for the responses. Trap is in the same location, not on a slide. Didn’t break the dam today so we’ll see what happens.

I’ll take a pic tomorrow. First year trapping. Could use some critique.

I've done better with these sets (castor in cage) a little later in the year
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I would move the cage off the dam ( most castor mounds I see are not on the dam)
And closer to the water
Slick up a path leading into the cage and use guide logs. Lightly brush in the cage
I also never put a mound or lure in the trap, but put lure on the top of the trap and up in the air behind the set.

Thanks for the replies. Pulled trap yesterday due to not being able to check for a couple days but will set it again this weekend using some of your guy’s suggestions. Another question I have is if anyone uses the double door z traps? This is the trap I’m using with only one door open. Thing is I can see the little channel they’ve been swimming through and it looks just deep enough to submerge the trap. Wondering if anyone uses that style trap as a swim through successfully? Definitely need to take/ post some pics.
