Bye Bye Sky!
« on: April 20, 2023, 08:23:58 PM »
It appears the Skykomish/Snohomish season is slashed to virtually nothing this year. May 27, 28 and 29 is all that is slated to be open for summer kings/steelhead below the Wallace. There is potential for additional 3 day openers based on wild Chinook encounters. Pinks won't even open until 9/16. Brutal! Guess I'll have to dust off the bass gear.  :'(

You'll have plenty of time to stack up pinks if that's what you want.  Mid September is when they start pushing up the river in force.  Bummer about the rest though.  Four days for kings is pretty much the best outcome one can hope for unfortunately.

Why spend all the money to grow and release them if nobody can fish for them anyway?

Where are you seeing this information?
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Good thing a guy can "trout" fish in the sky during September and October. And the "trout" will bite spinners.

This is really sad to hear, I have so many fantastic memories fishing for steelhead on the Sky!
The two bit hole down in o the bridge. That was my Dads favorite river to fish.

Well at least the Sealion that hangs out up in a certain hole near Sultan will be able to have a great time gorging himself on Kings and steelhead. It would be a shame if he had any competition from fishermen. :bash:

No sealion competition meand that the pinniped population is too low. It is a shame that the state can sell a license and then take away opportunity without prorated cost compensation.

I wrote an article that goes into additional detail about the lost opportunity on the Skykomish here: https://pnwbestlife.com/what-happened-to-our-2023-skykomish-summer-chinook-fishery/

Unfortunately, the issues that led to the closure this year are gonna be around for a bit...

Thank you for continuing to research and educate us from an angler perspective. We need more of this and you do a great job.

Yet another blow here. Breaks my heart. It’s tough to beat a beautiful June day on the Sky

Thanks Benny! We are still digging into the numbers because there's still some funkiness to work out. This kind of scrutiny being applied to the very complex models is going to payoff over time for anglers.
