Help ID a old rifle cartridge
« on: February 10, 2023, 05:08:26 PM »
My father has taken up a new hobby and metal detecting. Been finding a bunch of old brass around a few old homesteads in the Midwest. I have been able to id a lot of them but not this one.

Anyone know or have a good guess? Thought maybe 50-70 but it doesn’t have the recess ahead of the rim like the 50-70 does.

Is it rimfire?

I’m not sure. It has a tiny little hole where the primer pocket would be but was smaller then a primer so not sure. Has a rim and has found 32 rimfire in this area.

Got me scratching something :). So, no head stamp or side stamp (near the bullet crimp), this hole is it near the base of the casing. One more item is it brass or copper. I'm leaning towards a pinfire, maybe a French .69. This is kind of fun, helped a gal in GB with a Eley 12-gauge pinfire.

He said its brass. I think his detector indicates the type of metal. It could be a pin fire? I thought pin fire was from the side not the middle of the case from the rear like a standard primer. I have never seen anything big in the pin fire lineup. Thinking this is 50-70 cal.

I'll get a pic of the hole in the back.

What a cool thread!

Seeing the primer location and being brass, I'm with @Jolten on the identification.
