Are you sure? I thought the WDFW proceed numbers were just for the Cali tag.

Looks like you're right...about $20k raised for the Cali sheep raffle, and $101K for the Rocky sheep raffle. At least that's how it was in 2006.

The Cali bighorn raffle and Rocky Mountain bighorn raffle are not the same. The WDFW handles the Cali raffle and the Rocky Mt. raffle is conducted in partnership with the WA state chapter of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep and the WDFW. The Rocky Mt. raffle tag is only for the Blue Mountain sheep units while the Cali tag is for the rest of the state's sheep units, but not the Blues.

I usually take it as a donation to the organization. Sent a check and never even hear back if it is recieved or anything. Hell, don't even know if a legit raffle is held, but it was for a good cause. At least I assumed it went to a good place. I guess I dodn't even know that. I'm niave and trusting though.
Thanks for the link Ramslam. Seems like I get mailings from many of the other states, but always support this one.

Given that the WDFW site lists the Rocky raffle through 2006, I'm guessing that WAFNAWS got the raffle sometime after that?
Assuming that's the case, I'll go back to my original question...anyone know how many tickets they sell? It won't have an effect on whether I buy tickets, as I also view it as a donation. Just interesting to compare demand across the different species.

One in 4050 is the winner.
(I think the fee was $25.) but then again don't you get a 5th one free if you buy four.......or I could be thinking of another raffle.....

Correct boneaddict. WAFNAWS (in cooperation with WDFG) sells between $80,000 and $110,000 in tickets each year as of 2006(first year of the raffle). That's about 3000-4500 tickets. Washington state law forbids the buying up on tickets(ex-$25 each or 5 for$ 100)The money raised goes back to promoting Rocky Mt bighorn sheep in WASH. Not to the general fund. This raffle tag enables the hunter to hunt any of the open units listed on the flier for an extended season unlike a general draw tag hunter who is limeted to only one area. The raffle hunter can hunt one unit one day then a different the next.
By far this is the best bighorn tag in the state and the only way to get it is to purchase raffle tickets through WAFNAWS. Thank Ramslam and WAFNAWS for convincing the game commission to let the tag be raffled not auctioned.
Oh by the way, I love people that dont trust raffles because that just increases my odds!

I havent looked at this thread today so sorry for not responding to questions.
The drawing is conducted the first Wed. of August (August 5 this year). WAFNAWS sells the tickets and WDFW does the ol raffle barrel roll at one of their offices. A WDFW employee (director, commissioner, bio etc) draws the winning ticket and one alternate.
As printed on the raffle flyer we do not send "ticket stubs" in return and the reason is simply the cost. WANAWS spends from $5000-$10,000 per year to promote this tag and we would prefer to save the expense of mailing stubs back. If you ever want to know if your name is in the raffle barrel, feel free to email wafnaws@hotmail.com. We keep an excel list of everyone that's purchased tickets. It can get very busy the last weeks leading up to the drawing so please be patient but you will get a response.
Starbailey explained how the marketing works--its similar to any of the auction tags. WAFNAWS gets 10% of gross sales to promote the tag and 90% goes back to WDFW for the "Rocky bighorn sheep fund". This raffle actually started in 2005 at the request of the WAFNAWS board of directors. Since then, over $330,000 has been raised for Rocky Mtn bighorn projects in our state such as disease research at WSU and once the fence is repaired on the Tucannon, a transplant of sheep to that herd.
Sales in 2008 totaled ~$89,000 so roughly 4500 tickets.
Hope that helps.

I wish that they would put a cap on the number of raffle tags that one person could purchase. It seems that a lot of these raffle tags are turning into "auction" tags with the wealthy purchasing 100's of tags. Still, the money goes to a great cause but the odds are definately scewed.

Well it only takes one ticket to win plus it not only about the win it is what the cause is for. That money will help increase the population on Rockies and then or odds increase when the WDFW decide to give us more permits. Money means more sheep for us poor people to get a chance to draw.
