Sealion at Drano
« on: April 18, 2023, 08:24:26 PM »
Anyone else see the sea lion at Drano on Friday/Saturday? I was there last Friday and it was dead. Saw the sea lion right under the bridge but it was too far from me to confirm. All I could see was something swimming with its head just above the water, thought it was a river otter but after thinking about it it was not the right shape.  It was still there on Saturday, someone got pictures of it. Saw the pictures captured on Saturday via Facebook. How in the heck are these damn sea lions making it past Bonneville? Are they getting over via the locks maybe?

That's crazy if it is true, isn't Bonneville a pipe with bars over it to keep those fat furbags out?

a few years ago there were 4 or so all the way up at Dalles dam during the sturgeon opener.  Not sure what they were doing that far up that time of year

I have seen them around Hood River in the past. I didn't think anything about it at the time.

They can also walk around the dams. And let is not talk about dead ones. Just smile and move along.

They have been doing this for years.  I don't know if they are going through the locks or the fish ladder, but we had them swimming around us many times at the mouth of Wind River while we were fishing.

Is it possible for them to walk around the dam?  They are not restricted to water travel and I have seen 1500 lb bulls shoot 6 feet out of the water to get on rocks near the waters edge.

I would think they would be hard pressed to walk around Bonneville Dam.  It would just be easier to swim into the lock when a barge or boat is traveling up stream or travel through the fish ladder.

Yeah they have been coming up to the Dalles for about 30yrs. Relocating them doesn't even work either. There's one at the zoo with a freeze brand tattoo that they tried taking to California and it kept coming back a few weeks later. Couldn't resist the buffet at Bonneville and the Dalles apparently. They set a trap on the rocks at the Dalles about 20yrs ago and caught one in the middle of the night and someone showed up and shot it. The local tribes threatened to start hunting them but I don't know what they ultimately decided to do. I haven't spent as much time down there in the last 20 yrs.
