Shrimpin' Marine Area 6 July 7-10 Question?

Looking to shrimp the area NW of Protection Island on the subject weekend. Is it doable in a 18' jon boat? Got all the gear, just want to be safe.

Tides are not very good 7,8 and look a little better on 9,10. If the water was flat calm maybe, if not no.

I intend to be there that weekend in an 18' Klamath. I'll be watching the wind forecasts. It can get snarly there in a hurry. Anything over 1-2' wind waves and I will be sitting it out. A bigger boat could handle it.

Kind of like RB Stated, the tides aren’t ideal for shrimping out there.  Wind and weather is one thing but you’ve got to be careful on anything over 1.3 knots for water movement and 1.3 is probably about the max for shrimping

I see guys out there in smaller boats. That being said, wind and currents can be brutal. The tides 2-3 weeks ago you probably could have done it in a canoe.

So the answer is yes, with good conditions and judgement.

The 9th and 10th have 3 hour+ windows with currents <.5.
9th looks calm. Winds start picking up later in the morning on the 10th.

I really like when my boat is drifting about 0.5 mph.  At 1 mph, you won't get many shrimp in comparison and if you don't have a bunch of flotation your floats will be underwater.  Dead flat is bad too, but that doesn't happen often and you can just wait it out.

No Jon boat for me!! If you do then make sure you have a working vhf radio and can tune into channel 16.

Yeah, I use both links frequently. Deepzoom you can plan further out, but Windy I only like to use a few days in advance.
