Archery rimrock cow
« on: June 18, 2023, 08:58:04 PM »
So, I applied with my GF's dad and let him pick out choices, well we drew archery rimrock cow tags. I haven't really been in the area in close to 20yrs, and even then I wasn't hunting just running the jeep trails. Ive seen elk in there while wheeling, but that was usually around memorial weekend.
My question is, are there good animal numbers in the unit since I've been there yrs ago. what is hunter pressure like? And is it going to be fun lol

Lots of elk in the unit, but very tough hunting. It shouldn’t be a problem getting into them and getting it done, but it’s not a slam dunk.

Thanks guys.
I appreciate the input.
Time to put boots on the ground and do some serious scouting. Learn more then just the jeep trails  this time

Most all of the elk will be on the north slopes in September, there will be  hunting pressure for sure but get in  away from the roads and you should be able to find some elk
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!

Ya , that !!! Don't get me started , but ya get away from the christian rock concert , the open headers jeep clubs , the fan y flash dance dressed dirt bikers , the smooth criminals , and and that freek hunting in coderoy camos , and there's a microscopic chance you will see a elk moving 40 mph , still running from the clown that thought buggling on his new found toy all night was a great idea to attract elk to his foreya of his tent for the season opener , but if it's a elk , chances are it isn't a elk the size of a German Shepard , called a spike , but once you find your perfect get away , don't forget to watch the sky's for fire retardant carrying choppers , cuz that's your fair warning that Mr. Green jeans is coming soonly to end your fun , by telling you it's a fire closure are !!! But as you pull all your gear back together so it fits into your Suzuki samurai, remember this , it's a fire closure area cuz you accidentally stubbled upon the main heard , and it's Mr. Fish n feathers chore to protect the states revenue , but that's just my thoughts after hunting , almost died ,, had much success in that area for centuries , SO GET UP N GET OUT THERE , BEST OF LUCK TO YOU
loction location location ! perzackly !

When I had a tag there the most successful guys were hunting out of tree stands on natural escape routes and shot their elk on opening day. That’s back when it was a general tag, maybe not so busy.

I had this tag last year.  I was not familiar with the area so went up there for a weekend towards the end of August to scout.  I had eyes on elk every day I was up there along with fresh sign and beds in all the different areas I explored.  Felt very confident going into the season.  Went back for archery opener and it's like all the elk picked up and left the unit.  Spent 7 days out there hiking all over the unit and not only did I never see an elk but I never even found any sign that looked less than a couple weeks old.  I hiked an average of 15 miles a day going up and over ridges and into the goat rocks wilderness just trying to locate the elk. Not sure where they relocated to for the rut but just be aware that what you see there in August can be drastically different then what you find in September.
