I drew toutle archery bull this year.
« on: June 22, 2023, 07:05:28 PM »
I live close buy and have hunted and fished the area my hole life. I know it’s not the tag it used to be. Anyone have any info or experiences the last few years. I have a Weyco pass and will be spending all summer up there. I will help anyone that has drawn a muzzy tag.

The 4100 line was always a good starting point.  The 4250 as well.

Also a heads up.  There are a TON of side by side riders that will be on the state land portion.

I had the tag last year, if/when I ever draw it again I won't waste any time on state land. The few elk I saw seemed very skittish and didn't stick around long, I didn't get any response to any bugles, that wasn't a problem on Weyerhaeuser land especially the upper end of the 4100 road and off the 6600 road. Good luck.

My dad has the muzzleloader tag a few days later and we had the opposite experience on state land. Scouted Friday night and heard bugling bulls. Saturday morning and evening we were in bugling bulls and talking cows. Sunday morning I called in a hot bull and he shot him at ten yards. As we all know, a day or two can make a huge difference when it comes to elk activity. I also think some of the action was probably the same hull (although I’m certain there were a couple in the vicinity). It didn’t happen when he was between us and his cows (he just pushed them off). When the cows were between us and him, the threat was too much for him to bear.

We were not able to do a lot of scouting and the couple days I was up there, what I saw/found was not encouraging. Several people mentioned to not get discouraged by that, that elk seemed to materialize in season. Sure enough, in two evenings and two mornings, we had no problem finding elk.

I thought it was a great hunt. I’m would echo the idea of starting down by the river in the mornings.

Went scouting today. Seen a herd of 25 with 2 small rag horn bulls. It was sad that half the herd was limping. Hope to find some healthy elk.

I had the rifle rut tag, just after archery season, a few years ago. The rut didn’t really start until a few days into the rifle season, and then it turned on quickly. Lots of rut activity up against the Loowit border. Get in the timber and find some wallows.

Weather is changing. Should start hearing bugling bulls any day. Good luck everyone!
