Winchester 209 primers
« on: June 28, 2023, 11:00:34 AM »
Just a heads up for those living up on the Olympic Peninsula.  Swains got in a bunch of Winchester 209 primers.  I haven't seen these for a long time.

That is a really good sign that shotgun primers other than Cheddite are starting to show up.

If you use them, get them while you can. The plant that makes them had an explosion last week killing one employee while transporting the chemicals to make them. I haven't seen any more Infor on this lately.

I have loaded just short of 10k cheddite with zero issue except finding recipes is a little harder.  I still prefer Winchester but nothing wrong with cheddite.

For myself I have been using them for years reloading Trap shells and really have never had a problem with them.   I have experimented with a little in a ML and they have worked,  But... they are a shorter primer and very slightly fatter as they built to metric standards.  Originally they were built to mimic the Winchester W209 in performance.

Off the topic on this post, regarding Win 209's.
Back story, I was shooting Sporting Clays in Scotland with two Retired engineers. Engineers being Engineers after a round of clays it was time for a cup-a 9 (tea). The two started asking me what primers I used for reloading. The previous year the two took a brick of Fed, Win, CCI, Rem, Ched, Nobel, RIO and Fio’s and mic’d each one, did a heat test, and a pressure test. When done the Ched came out on top for being the most consistent.
