I was advised to always carry a handgun while outdoor recreating on the Oly Pen. Mother cougar runs last year's offspring off at some point when she has new kittens.......that offspring has limited hunting skills, they get very hungry until they develop skills and humans might become an easier possible target. Makes sense to me.

Once considered to be largely solitary animals, recent research has indicated cougars have complex social structures. They begin to breed at 2-3 years old and continue to breed every 2-3 years throughout their lifespan, which lasts an average of eight years.Straight off google.
its interesting with firearms in NP's. It is perfectly legal to carry. The moment you discharge in the park its arrestable. In yellowstone for instance they specifically say dont use on animals, use spray. slippery slope and lawyers get the profits.... glad the child is ok...
Would be nice if they put dogs on this to find it.
“A person is one thousand times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a cougar,” according to the department.I have a feeling those odds change dramatically when you're actually in the woods, in high density cougar habitat, and making dying animal noises trying to call one in.
