My son had passed on a pair of spikes 30 minutes prior. He was feeling down and was quite sure he wouldn't see any good deer this year. A bit later, this guy walked right by me and was heading towards the boy so I just let him go. Somehow, my son didn't see him so after a few quiet minutes, I rounded him up and we went looking for the buck. We found him only 50 yards away with his nose up a doe's butt.A good shot (only God knows how with all that hair over his eyes), a mule kick, and 10 yards of run before he got tired and took a dirt nap.
My kid is a mule deer magnet!!!
The wife got a little buck on the last day. Not very big but he has tons of character. Double main beam on one side. Would have had a double main beam on the other side too but looks like he busted it off. Double hooked points coming off the back of the bases. Cool buck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Killed a dandy blacktail yesterday. Exceeded all expectations I had for the season.
Posted in the rut thread, but I'll put it here with the little story. With the weather cooling quickly here and the recent rut activity I've been seeing I told my girls they could skip school Friday if they wanted to go hunting. I thought they'd both jump at the opportunity but only my oldest did (I thought it would have been the other way around). Got a late start to the day after waiting for the tire shop to open to get winter tires mounted for my soon to be driving daughter's car. Made it to the woods at 8:45am and 1/4 mile past the gate we see a doe and a spike. I ask her if she wants to shoot the spike and she isn't really super excited about it, they move into the woods and we move on. It was cold and foggy so I knew glassing cuts wasn't going to be very effective so we headed for an old grassy spur rd with fairly thick reprod on both sides where I've seen good bucks before. We get out and walk a mile or so and I spot 2 does about 80 yards in the reprod. I glass them for 5 minutes or so, they're just hanging out and feeding occasionally. We're about to move on when they both turn and look to the same spot at the same time. I look closer through the binoculars and I see antlers, big antlers through the brush. He was bedded there the whole time. I knew my kid didn't have a clear shot where we were so we move around a little and she gets a tree rest where she says she can see it's neck clearly. I tell her to aim for his neck just below his head. I'm watching through my glass as her shot rings out. I see neck impact and he stands up. I'm like what the heck? I'm telling her shoot again, shoot again. A couple seconds and bang, flop. Does move 10 yards and watch. We get up to him and she says "oh my gosh he's big, and he stinks"! I'm freaking stoked, biggest blacktail I've ever been a part of harvesting. This is her 2nd buck. I said it's going to be real tough to top this one. We get him drug to the road we walked in on and I go get the truck and drive back to them. Got it gutted and loaded up, skinned and caped out by noon. God is good! I've got Idaho in a couple weeks then hopefully can fill our last WA tag the day I get back during extended buck.
