I am always stunned, stunned I say, when I find out a criminal with multiple convictions or arrests breaks the law again. Really. No, I am not kidding. Stunned.

Until the justice system gets revamped criminals don’t care, they will just keep doing what they want!  3 hots and a cot!  Vacation!  The last 40 years the jail system has been nothing but a resort for criminals.  If they get caught they figure it vacation time.

Well, we all hate it but was given a pretty good explanation by an attorney friend.  He says most jails on the Westside are at capacity and they are fighting lawsuits claiming the overcrowding is inhumane.   So, they're kinda between a hardspot and a rock. Judges and prosecutors would like
 to hand out stiffer jail time, but will get fines and sanctions if they overfill the jails and prisons. Of course try to find a community or area that wants a new jail or prison near them is hard and passing a levy to finance new ones is even harder. Not saying it's right, but that's the new world we live in.

I would question the whole 'our prisons are full' argument - the prison population in Washington in 2022 was about 12,972, down from a high of 18,112 in 2018. In 4 years it had dropped over 28% (These figures are from the Washington State Office of Financial Management). A lot of that has to do with Inslee releasing thousands because of the Covid 'crisis' and releases due to the Blake decision, when drugs suddenly became legal, retroactive to the beginning of time.

The simple truth is that our elected officials just don't want to see anyone imprisoned, preferring 'rehabilitation' and less intrusive means of punishment like home detention and probation. The very same people who want to take away your 2nd Amendment rights and who think that guns are terrible are the same ones who argue against mandatory firearm enhancements for gun crimes - if you are a criminal, they don't want you to serve any enhanced time for using a gun in a crime, but if you are a law abiding citizen who possesses an AR-15, well they want to take that away and make it a crime for you to even possess it.

Without consequences, there is no incentive for criminals to change their behavior.

I'm sorry but I don't buy it. They're closing jails down, claiming they don't have enough prisoners to justify keeping them open. They've closed several on the west side in the past few years, one near me at Larch Mountain. They also closed down the island facility for dangerous sex offenders, releasing most of them back into population. AGs for both OR and WA are extremely "progressive", which, of course, leads to zero progress. The former Prosecuting Attorney for King County, Dan Saddlesore was a complete moron with a revolving door policy for violent offenders. It appears that the current PA for King County, Leesa Manion, has been cut from the same cloth.

Jails are expensive!
They cut into the tax revenue that is supposed to go into the politicians pockets. It's much cheaper to let the criminals (non-elected) to run free and create havoc than it is to house, feed and medicate them.

And don’t forget, now felons can vote in Washington. So they can help to vote in more and more judges who are soft on crime

Didn't you know? It's cruel and unusual punishment to force people who are cruel and unusual to work for their keep. Have some compassion for these people, have some empathy.
