Winter Deer Kill (Stevens County)?
« on: June 10, 2009, 07:35:48 AM »
I didn't make it out turkey hunting this year. So the best way to find out about the winter kill is asking the turkey hunters who were out this spring. Did any of you guys find a lot of dead deer this year?

The few times I made it out there I didn't see any dead ones, but I have a few on my camera that looked like they were lucky to make it. That's in the Loon Lake area.

I'm from Chewelah and in the spring of 93 there were dead deer every where. Blue toung in the fall and a hard winter to boot.

It was sporadic.  I found lots of winterkill in some areas and none in others.   They had a rough winter.  Not sure how many fawns got absorbed.  We shall see.

I have a friend who lives on the Springdale-Hunters Road and they normally see 80 to 100 deer on the drive into Springdale.  They said they are seeing 30 to 40 deer during the same drive.

I was over to blue creek in FEB. and the deer looked very thinn.  The north side of the HWY 395 where the ground was open the deer looked very thinn. And local farmers who were still feeding them had thinn deer also.

We found one dead mature buck in Stevens County this spring.  Got caught in a ravine with drifted snow.

mountain areas have been hit hard....the most deer are in farm areas where they survived the winter on farmers feeding operations, etc....areas with lots of lowland southern exposure did not get hit as hard either....

He is asking guys who frequent the turkey woods if they saw deer winter kill.... sort of "hedging his bet"?
