Turkey hunting newbs
« on: January 30, 2024, 02:29:10 PM »
My daughter (15) has always enjoyed going deer hunting with me but she never wanted to hunt herself. She recently told me she now wants to start hunting and wants to start with turkeys. Not sure where she got that from as I have never hunted turkeys myself but I'm excited she wants to hunt now. She has already passed her hunters ed (I had her take that early on during covid while she was stuck at home). I've also recently bought her a 20 gauge and took her to the range to shoot some trap. She did great and had a huge smile on her face.

Anyways, we were planning on a camping trip near Lake Wenatchee during her spring break from school and I realized that week is also the opening for youth spring turkey season. Our other options were near Rimrock Lake. Would either of these two locations be a viable option or should we look elsewhere?

Also, any tips or advice for us? I'll be doing as much research as I can for the next two months.

Thanks.

Your best bet for turkeys is going to NE Washington.

if you go for a drive now and see groups in low fields... they will be generally there come season... private fields - public / paper behind or above/near.... pretty standard...

There is quite a few turkeys in the lake wenatchee/ plain area now, but unfortunately I'd bet 95% of them are on private property's. Especially being so early in the spring.  Ive seen them higher up in elevation on public land but that's more in the summer time.   If you didn't want to travel as far as the NE corner, cle elum and teanaway hold a ton of birds.  Not easy there on public land but more opportunities than lake wenatchee area.
